How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes initially I had the intention to start my own poultry business and rear chicken until they are ready for sale so as to have something that would bring in income for my family and I. Also my husband and I have always anticipated to purchase a piece of land and build a house for our small family since we still reside at my husband's village, and having our own place to call home has always been our life long dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave me and my family an opportunity to put our dream of someday owning a house to life, and for that we are extremely grateful and we sincerely hope it continues to do so for others as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As I mentioned before, owning a piece of land and building had also been an aspiration for my husband and I so that our children would have a better home, so after receiving the transfer, we tried to see if we could achieve this but it proved to be too costly considering the amount we had received, also putting in mind that we had saved even the first transfers. Then we opted to purchase bricks and build a house from where we stayed at the moment since our four children are still young, where one is in primary, two are in kindergarten and one is still a baby. We therefore purchased three lorries of bricks and are now waiting to begin construction of our house while some of the money was also used to cater for food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On receiving the first transfer, I was excited and grateful to God for the faithfulness he had shown us after the promise given by GiveDirectly got honored that soon. Alone in the house, I could not hesitate to call my husband who then was away at his usual job. It was a great feeling sharing the excitement with him on the phone - he was so happy that he requested me to take good care of the whole amount as he was hoping to be home in a fortnight. Knowing that we had plans to accomplish together, I assured him of the money safety till he comes back.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is great hope and positive energy every morning as I start a new day. I am always grateful and with expectations of the two projects yet to start on house renovation and the payment of the new piece. These two have been holding us back, and it will be good to see them done so that we can start preparing the land either for crops or livestock farming.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer, we decided with my husband to hold the spending until we receive the second transfer. This is because we have a plan to kick-start two projects that needed a large sum of money at the same time. We had been living on our parent's small piece of land that had just been enough to build and cultivate a small part of it without having to introduce livestock. Our uncle had hinted us of a piece of land on offer, and it was our consideration to accumulate finances and take that challenge. GiveDirectly transfer came in handy, and a combination of the two, plus our savings will put us in the right position to buy the piece. My husband had been making savings from his current job at the boutique in town that has always kept us going in our daily billing. With our family of six, our four children are still young with the elder one currently in grade two. Even though we don't have a decent and spacious house currently, we never prioritize putting up a new one but instead renovate our old three-roomed one. This will at least give our kids a warm shelter and preventing them from the frequent common colds they had been experiencing. If we will still be left with some amount after spending both on the piece of land and the renovation, I will consider obtaining new clothing for my children and adding foodstuff to our store.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Living communally comes with many challenges. It comes with hate and quarrels most of the time from other family members. This money will help me get away from all this and have peace of mind. I will buy a one acre piece of land which will cost me between 500-600 USD. I will build a house and shift with my spouse and children. I will be able to farm peacefully and get relieved from emotional stress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My mornings determine how my day will be. Waking up healthy and strong is what makes me happy. I spend most of the morning hours doing house chores. I fetch water, firewood and wash clothes and utensils. Morning is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My household is among the over 20 households in the compound. My spouse is one of the grandsons to the compound head. When his parents passed on, some family members started mistreating and hating him due to family related issues. This continued even after he married me. My spouse and I have really struggled to co exist well with some of the family members. I live with fear since most of the time my spouse is away at work. We have always wanted to buy a piece of land and start a separate life away from family wrangles but financial constraints has been a hindrance. This is what has been my biggest hardship in my 8 years of marriage.
