How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As at now I have not yet set any goal to work on. I usually set goals and plans of what to do if I have the money at hand. This is because I taught myself not to plan in vein. If I set a goal, it usually disturbs my mind till it is accomplished that's why I do not set goals if I do not have money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am very grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly, my son was just frustrated for missing the finances to enable him join college but when I received the second transfer, I was able to facilitate his tertiary education. In my view, there is no organization that I can compare with GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My son has been out of school due to lack of money. After completing his secondary education, he was very eager to join college but finances bared me from making his dream coming to pass. Upon withdrawing the second transfer money, I opted to recandle his dream by paying KES 30000.00 college fees for him to join. After settling the college issue, I did some renovation to my house by constructing some pillars to make it more firm. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount to buy some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received the money because it was a relief from the hard work of digging tree trunks and logs to burn charcoal and sell. It was a very tedious and tiresome work , therefore, I was so grateful when I got the money because that put an end to that hard work.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is how I have been relieved from the hard work of digging tree trunks and logs to burn charcoal and sell, as well as having gotten a more comfortable and satisfying occupation which is looking after my own goats. I am so happy, grateful and with a peace of mind now unlike before when I had not started receiving money from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer which was KES 20000 on building and reinforcing the walls of my house that I had been living in because it was an idea and plan I had been having but it was slow on implementation due to lack of money since the charcoal-burning and selling business could hardly raise me enough money even for a day's meal. Therefore, I am now so happy and grateful that after completing this project, my house will have stronger walls and pillars that will keep it in a good and steady condition for a long time and I will not be worried about it falling or its walls collapsing. This gives me a peace of mind. I also spent another KES 20000 on buying nine goats because it has started to rain in our place and it's my hope that it will continue to rain for there to be grass and shrubs in plenty for my goats. This is because these goats are, to me, a substitute for the tedious and tiresome work of digging tree trunks and logs to burn charcoal and sell. I am in my advanced age and strength is fading as I get older which will make it even more difficult to continue with the charcoal-burning and selling business. I am happy and satisfied with looking after my goats and I know that if they continue to multiply and increase in numbers, I will count on them in the future to sell one or two and address the financial challenges I will be facing. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for making this happen.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a source of wealth to my family. This I plan to achieve through livestock rearing. I will spend KES 30000 to buy 10 goats that will act as a long-term investment project for my household. I will further spend KES 5000 to buy ingenious chicks. As the chicken and goats multiply I will sell them at profit. I will also use KES 30000 to renovate my house and extend it because the one I am currently living in is small and is almost falling. The remaining amount will cater for other household expenses like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last week we get relief food from the government. I was one of the beneficiaries whereby I was given 15kgs of maize and 5kgs of beans. This made me happy because I have been saving my income from charcoal work to cater for other household expenses since I already have food for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the challenge that I am currently facing. This is due to the prolonged drought in the area. It's been almost 1 year since we had ample rain. This has been the stumbling block in achieving my dream of owning livestock. The little income of KES 600 per week from charcoal food I mainly spend it on food.
