How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to buy a dairy cow to cut the daily cost. I do small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption and the extra we sell it to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. I did not had an extra money to saved so that I can buy a dairy cow. Currently I have started to save the money that I could have used to buy milk to pay school fees for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard and enable us to own cows which could have taken quite a long time to have.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do fine anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me. I also bought two goats. This is a means of investment since they reproduces faster and I will be able to sell them to buy another dairy cow. The rest of the money I bought food and paid school fees for my children in various schools. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard and those of people around us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 2pm while in the hospital visiting my aunt who was sick when I heard my phone ring. On checking my phone, I was very happy to see KES 55,000 such a lump sum I have never received.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is building a semi permanent house which I had desired to build for the past two years.I had even started saving towards building the house but GiveDirectly transfers came on time. There's increased happiness because it's been completed earlier than expected. I am also happy because I bought an additional heifer which I had desired for the past three years but couldn't afford. This will help as an alternative milk source whenever one cow is on their dry spell. The transfers have also enabled me buy food in bulk enough to sustain them for a longer period. Nowadays, I am occupied with duties around my farm and no longer do casual labor to get food because the transfers have eased my household burdens.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 in building house because the one I had was 14 Iron sheets and a bit tiny especially for visitors. I also spent KES 15000 on heifer as an addition to the one I had. When my cows give birth and multiply I intend to buy another piece of land. I also spent KES 2000 on my kid's school uniforms. I also spent KES 4000 on purchase of bulk food items a sack of maize, rice and wheat flour because initially we ate from hand to mouth. I also spent KES 3000 on my kid's school fees because I normally depend on dairy and poultry farming.
