How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing two heifers is one of the new goals that I did not have before receiving the transfer. We decided as a family to invest in this because we have been buying milk daily and it's so costly for us. When they reproduce in the next year we will get enough milk for the family and cut the cost.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The training and the registration process were perfectly done and everyone who received the transfer spent it well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well since they fulfilled all their promises.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 39,000 on purchasing two heifers. I am so happy now because I know in the next year when they reproduce, I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. This is because I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village to earn an income. I will be in a position to save the money that I could have used on milk for other household purposes. I spent the rest of the money on clothes, food, and other basic household items. I am so happy for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8am while thatching the roof a neighbor's house of the house when I received an SMS notification on my phone. Upon checking it, it was KES 55000 from GiveDirectly I was overwhelmed with joy and had to stop work for while.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is availability of adequate food for my family and adequate feeds for my livestock.This is because the transfers enabled me buy a motorcycle which is a daily income source. I am grateful because my household and livestock keeping expenditure has reduced.

I topped up most of my recent transfer and bought a motorcycle which is now a source of daily income for my family. It also helps in transportation of livestock feeds and water. I spent the rest on food and household items. Before the GiveDirectly transfers, I used to work as mason in order to feed my family and the job was quite unreliable because it came on a seasonal basis

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I can now fulfill my longest dream of buying a motorcycle. I will be doing a motorcycle taxi. This will be a good source of income for my family. House construction is what has been helping me to meet my family's needs but in the process my wife became sick. Before her sickness l had made some savings to purchase a motorcycle but her health became worse. We went in and out of the hospital. I could take her for a checkup thrice a month which depleted my savings. So when I get this transfer and buy a motorcycle it will enable me to earn income which I will put into saving and meet all the basic needs of my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is the evening. This is the time we enjoy dinner as a family. We consider a reunion time after I went out in the morning to look for work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been a lack of money. All my savings I spent on my wife's treatment and surgery. I used to do house construction but when my wife's health deteriorated I spent most of my time in and out of hospital thus reduced income. Her health problem has delayed all the projects we had as a family even getting basic needs became a challenge.
