How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did not have a place to live in before and was always crushing at my cousin's house. He was already fed up of my irresponsible behaviour and was just about to kick me out. I am happy I started receiving the transfer at a time when I was about to become homeless and I managed to rent a house. I am currently peacefully living in my own house where I have also managed to purchase some household items. I am very grateful to Give Directly for giving me the chance to better my life.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am not at a good financial position and my overall lifestyle is also not quite good. I used to work at a local brewery den where I was always drunk due to the nature of my work. I could not make anything good out of my life including renting a place to stay and had to be hosted by my cousin. When I started receiving the transfers, I got the opportunity to be independent and moved into my own house which I now pay for using the transfers. As it is, I would not be able to pay the rent once this project is over, due to low income and would go back to asking for help from my relatives. For this reason, there is a need for me to have a stable source of income so that I can be able to stand on my own later on. I am planning to purchase a motorcycle on credit with my savings and the transfers combined as the initial payments. I will then clear the payment on the motorcycle from the money that I will make from the motorcycle taxi business. I must, however, save the rest of the transfers if I want to achieve this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole amount I recently received on household and personal needs such as paying for my rent, purchasing foodstuff and clothing. I am currently working at a carwash that is owned by our group and because there are many of us working there in shifts, it is hard to make a decent amount.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I joint street life when I was young after my mother passed on since I needed to survive. Life was difficult because I did not go to school this meant I only could do causal jobs like touting and most of the time I was in the police custody because of my ignorance in laws and regulation . I lost hope in life and became a drug addict. I was living in a tiny one-room house together with three of my friends who took me in and all we did was nothing but stay high all day. The living environment was pathetic as we had no money to buy the most basic household items or even the time to clean up the house . After I started receiving GD transfers, I decided to leave my previous life and I isolated myself from the bad company when I looked for my house and look for work which I was fortunate to get in a nearby carwash. Today I am more responsible since the transfer combine with my income I can access basic needs for my house and personal items which has lead for my reunion with my girl whom we had separated.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
At the moment I do not see myself with any new goal but first I have to ensure that my life is in order by having a better living place and the most basic household requirements. This is because after leaving the lifestyle of drug addition I got a decent job at a carwash in Mathare though its wages are not sustain. I am still figuring out how to stabilize my life using GiveDirectly's monthly transfers .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before I depended on my two friends whom we used to share rent staying in one cubical house. When I started receiving my transfers , I felt the need of being responsible and moved to my house. I used my most recent transfer to pay rent and I also bought clothes to replace my old rugged ones.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I started receiving these transfers, I was living in a tiny one-room house together with three of my friends and all we did was nothing but stay high all day. The living environment was pathetic as we had no money to buy the most basic household items or even the time to clean up the house. After the transfers started coming, I decided to quit t kind of lifestyle by quitting the job I used to do at a local illicit brew site as it contributed 100% to my lack of sobriety and even looked for a more decent job at a carwash. I moved out of the house we lived in and rented a place of my own where I have more privacy and more responsibilities which always keep me in check because bills have to be paid and I have no one else look at. GD transfers gave me the confidence to make that decision because I knew I would have money to pay my rent and even buy food in case I did not find any source of income.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am currently working at a carwash where I was fortunate to get employment after I quit working at an illicit brew site. The job is decent but not sustaining, therefore I would like to start a business of my own as soon as I have saved enough money to set one up. I have a friend who sells second-hand clothes and he had once asked me to join him but I could not due to my previous life of alcoholism and lack of capital. I know the business does not require much capital and I will have him to guide me on the best tips to grow the business as he has done it for long, but first I have to ensure that my life is in order by having a better living place and the most basic household requirements and GD transfers are helping me take care of that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After I started receiving GD transfers, I decided to leave my previous lifestyle filled with drug addiction and alcoholism and make something out of my life. I isolated myself from the bad company I used to keep and I am currently working on cleaning up myself and making myself presentable. Most of the money I have been receiving have been used to buy basic needs in my house and personal items such as clothes and shoes, and this month was no different as I spent some of the money on those items. I saved some of the money in our table banking group and spent the rest on foodstuff.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My new goal is to a start a new business where I sell second hand clothes. I will use my transfers to start this business. This will be a source of income to meet my basic needs and pay rent. I will no longer depend on casual jobs since I have a constant source of income.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has changed significantly in that I have acquired household items that I did not have before. I used to live with my cousin since the money I got from casual jobs was little and I could not pay rent. I used my transfers to buy household items and paid rent. I also bought clothes and shoes and I can now put on smart clothes unlike in the past when I used to put on old and rugged ones.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to buy bed. In the past before I received my transfers from Give Directly I was living with my cousin. His house was small and could not accommodate all the family members comfortably. I was depending on him to provide my basic needs since the money I got was little and at times I could stay for a month without a source of income since the casual jobs was not constant. When I received my transfers , I moved to my house and bought household items such as utensils and paid rent. I also used the remaining amount to buy shoes and clothes since I had old and rugged . Thank you Give Directly for the cash transfers.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was seven o'clock in the morning when I woke up to the good news that I have received money from Give Directly. I was so happy since I knew that I will no longer depend on my cousin and I will move to my house. I prayed and thank God since I was not expecting to get the money on that day.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will open a new business to help me sustain myself financially. Have been doing the kind of work am doing for a long time and it's time I Changed though I will need help.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is police violence/harrassment because my community is known for rebelling against the police and a negative perspective towards young people and since am a reformed youth am at a risk of police attack since they don't believe I can change. Though it's true that some of us have bad habits but that does not give a room to violate one's right just because a group of us are bad. Sometimes I wonder what kind of laws our police officers enforce!
What are your greatest ambitions?
Since am a reformed youth I would want to be used as an ambassador of changed youth in my community for I know there are more youth like me who were and are still in my state and would want given an opportunity to show the world who they can be.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I always go pick my miraa and relax in my house to enjoy myself with my friends.sometimes I go to play football with my teammates ,then maybe go to watch soccer later on as a way of passing my evening session. My crew and I have much in common especially chewing miraa and drinking.
