How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a plan to start a shop business. There is a building at our home that used to be a shop and there is no one who is currently using it. I hence thought of starting the business since it will not cost me a lot and also because it will help me get more income. I usually engage in casual work of plumbing where I get paid approximately KES 500 per day. I plan to save up some of the money that I get paid and use it in starting the business. I was not able to start it when I still had the transfers because I used the money mainly on buying the most of things that I didn't have in my house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly enabled me to buy the things that I lacked in my household and which I never thought I will be able to buy soon due to lack of money. I was able to buy furniture, utensils, a mattress, and many more. Also, they uplifted the lives of many in the community and most of them are at the same level now since they were able to do what they had always wanted to do but lacked the money to do so. Apart from those, GiveDirectly also did well when they conducted the community entry-level meetings. They explained well in detail to the people in the community about what GiveDirectly and the program were all about. I, therefore, urge them to continue with the good work that they do.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my second transfer on buying the things that I didn't have in my household. I had just started living on my own and I lacked most of the things in my house, such as furniture, utensils, mattress, and many more. I didn't have the money to buy all those things since I usually engage in casual work of plumbing to earn a living. I usually get paid approximately KES 500 per day and most of this money usually goes to the purchase of food and other household necessities. So when I got the lump-sum transfer from GiveDirectly, I saw an opportunity to purchase those things that I didn't have. I now have seats to sit on and a bed to sleep just like other people. I am so much grateful to GiveDirectly for making this happen.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon receiving the message from GiveDirectly, I was so excited to confirm the receipt of the first transfer. This brought forth the hope of constructing a new house. It was hard to believe during the enrollment period that I will receive the money without having to do anything first. It was all celebration when I received it as I had been anticipating the arrival so that I can initiate the construction work. I am still thankful and confident that I can now welcome any visitor home and even plan to soon start a family of my own since I have ample space to accommodate.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is the construction of a new house that has given me great hope of progression in life. I am hoping to soon start my own family as I can comfortably accommodate and provide for the household through the current farming projects I have. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly that has given me a chance to build my life afresh.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the first transfer had been a great motivation for me as it has impacted a lot in my life. I had been able to construct a new house after purchasing 32 iron sheets, roofing frames, and also building posts useful in the erection of the walls. I spent KES41000 in total after all the purchases, transportation, and construction cost. I had been living in a small grass-thatched hut that I inherited two years ago from my brother. Life has never been easier for me as I had been hoping to accumulate some money from the casual labor I had been doing to enable me to put up a new structure. This has never been possible as it brought all other plans to a standstill as I could not even start a family of my own under a dilapidated shelter. I also obtained new clothing worth KES3000 as all I had were already old and tattered. Since I needed an income-generating project, I spent KES 5000 on obtaining few chicks that I am currently rearing with the hope of increasing them in the future. With the remaining amount, I obtained household foodstuff and kitchenware that I was missing in my old house

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream has always been to establish a good house for myself, this house I live in now belonged to my late mother. I have been unable to build a house or pay for my school fees since the sudden death of my mother who was the breadwinner of the family. Being the last born I had to sell a part of my share of piece of land to pay my school fees and gather for food and other household needs. Now that I may receive these transfers I shall build a good house worth $40 and buy a dairy cow .I shall sell the milk and earn at least $15 a month.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day because I get to interact with my friends and share a lot of stories and challenges concerning the day's work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The sudden death of my mum in the year 2016 was a great shock to me.my mum was the bread winner and a great friend to me, I had to stop schooling at form three because there was no one to pay my school fees nor gather for my basic needs. My mother was a second wife to my dad and my dad is now a very old man.I had to struggle a lot up to this level I am now.
