How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I did not have before receiving the cash transfer is to build another house for my children. I trust it's high time they need to shelter under their roof because they are now teenagers and I believe that they require enough privacy. Also, I feel they need to have ample space to study whenever given school assignments. This is one way of equipping them for a brighter future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing a good job hence bringing so much joy into our lives. Most of us in the village were hopeless because of the high poverty levels, none of us had a reliable source of income or an asset to rely on. There is now a huge transformation which is evident in the livestock that we own and the decent houses among others. Thus, I do not see anything that went wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a few building materials which include; nails, iron sheets, threads, and labour charges which all cost around $150. I had intended to finish constructing my new house which was under construction. I purchased all these purposely for the construction of a new house considering that the previous one was very small and in a poor state. For all those years we have been seeking shelter from friends, especially during the winter seasons. These used to be the most stressful moment in our lives because people could sometimes call us names, and humiliate my children as well. I now feel relieved because GiveDirectly has at long last restored my dignity and joy in life. Also, I bought two goats for $ 60 and I am hopeful that will reproduce and increase in number within a short period. I will therefore be in a position to sell one or two and cater for all my financial crises on time. Additionally, I paid the medical bill of $30 for my three sons who had undergone circumcision a few weeks ago. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my five family members. I am happy and grateful that we no longer borrow foodstuffs from neighbours like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I do subsistence farming for a living. I went to the farm very early in the morning as it is very hot in coastal region at the moment. I went back home few minutes before noon, my son whom I left home to do house chores welcomed me with a very warm hug not knowing his intentions. He later informed me that the transfers were already sent, since I am illiterate and not in a position to read the messages, I had to wait for my husband to come back in the evening to confirm as I did not believe it would be sent on an earlier date.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I nolonger walk long distance to fetch water, this has been so hectic and tiresome. Buying water on a daily basis was quite expensive ,having a water tank has assisted my family as the money I used to buy water can now be spent on buying food.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The house I previously had was not in good shape, It was leaking and most of my household items were already destroyed. Besides, it could collapse any time. The transfers I received meant so much to me.I used Kshs 22,000 to build a decent house for my family of three. I also used Kshs 25,000 to pay school fees for my son who was joining form one in a boarding school. Getting water has been the greatest challenge as well, I used the balance of Kshs 8000 to buy water tank , this will help in storing water so as to avoid buying water for use on a daily basis.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means restoring the dignity that I have lost for a long time. This is because I am currently residing in a one-room grass-hatched house with my 4 children and this does not give me privacy. My plan is to use 55000 KES to construct a spacious two-roomed house with an iron sheet roof that can accommodate us. I will also use 30000 KES to buy 2 modern beds and mattresses to ensure my family is living in better condition. The rest of my transfer will be invested in my children's educational needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of December, I sold my goat at a cost of 3000 KES. This brought happiness to my life because I used the money to buy food that lasted my family for one week.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of food is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing in my life. This has been made worse by the ongoing drought in our area. It has been over 3 years since we experience ample rainfall in this area. Subsistence farming has been my income-generating activity since 1994 when I was married to this village. Due to the continuation of drought farming is no longer productive to me. Feeding my children is not easy given that I depend on charcoal burning to get money. This job earns me as little as KES 3000 per week. Most of the time we skip meals and this makes me uncomfortable.
