How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I no longer have to worry about the future of my 5 children's after supporting their educational needs. Previously, I was struggling to educate them , most of the time they were send home due to school fees. This affected their performance and they had to repeat classes since most of the time they were at home. Furthermore, I was able to improve the livestock rearing by purchasing 12 more goats and purchasing veterinary medicine to treat them whenever they fall sick.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for coming up with the cash transfer program. Through the aid, my life has been transformed for the better. I was able to support my children education and most importantly, it assisted me in improving my goats rearing by purchasing additional 12 goats. I am grateful about what I have achieved with the help of the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With 5 children in school, I have struggled a lot in providing their educational needs.They were constantly at home due to fee balances. This is because I depend on charcoal vending a job which earns me an income of KES 250 per day, which I normally use it on food remaining with no coin to support other needs. I spent KES 20,000 to clear the fee arrears of my elder son who is in form 3. Similarly, I spent KES 10,000 to pay for the boarding fee of my second child who is in class eight. In addition, I used KES 3,000 to clear the full year fees the remaining 3 children who are still in lower primary. I spent part of the remaining amount to purchase veterinary medicine for the treatment of my 12 goats which I had bought with my first transfer. I bought enough food with the last part of my transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 8 am when I was at my farm preparing my firm with my helper. I heard the message notification on my phone after checking it was my transfer from Givedirectly. I felt very happy after receiving my transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Improve my livestock farming activities was the biggest difference in my life since I have been depending on it for my upkeep of my family. Also, I am sure that my dream of educating my children up to to the university will be achieved. I will be able to sell them when they multiple to cater for their educational needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My desire was to improve my livestock rearing activity by adding more goats since I sold most of them to educate my 5 children. The moment I received my transfer, I spent $ 300 on purchasing 11 goats. Currently, I am a happy farmer after replacing my flock. Also, I spend $ 200 to clear motorbike debt of my elder child who purchased it on hire purchase. I spent the remaining amount to purchase enough food supply for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means purchasing a pair of oxen. This is in line with my ambition to achieve food security for my family. Currently I farm only 2 acres of land and the much I get is food that last for 4 months. This means I have to purchase food for the rest of the year yet I depend on casual jobs for a living. Having these animals will mean scaling up farming as well as hiring them to generate some income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am resting. My day is always packed with energy consuming activities such as uprooting trumps, cutting down trees and burning charcoal. I always long for the time when I get to settle and regain my energy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability as a result of an unstable source of income is my biggest hardship. My husband and I burn charcoal for a living which earns around 3000 shillings a month. This amount is not sufficient to provide for a family of 8 comfortably. In this regard, we can go without food for 2 days. My children are always sent home for school fees because I cannot raise cash on time.
