How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning more goats to keep on my homestead. They have been my favorite domestic animals considering that they thrive so well in my region. Also, their offspring normally take fewer days to mature and I feel by having more of them would change my life completely. Once I will able to achieve that, I believe that I will be able to sort out any financial challenge that I might have.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, Give Directly has been doing especially in helping most needy individuals financially. It empowered each one of us in achieving our long time goals. Also, I was granted permission to pick what to purchase according to my heart's desires. I do not see anything that needs to be changed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying twenty pieces of iron sheets, poles, nails, and timber. This was for the construction of my house since the previous one was in a pathetic state and almost collapsed. To add to that, during rainy days, it would leak terribly. We have therefore been forced to move to our friend's houses whenever it happens to rain. It has never been easy at all. Those cold nights and harsh weather and cold nights were unbearable. My spouse and I are very old we only depend on our children for our daily bread therefore upgrading the house to a better one would take years. I am now happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for finally changing my story. I am no longer worried about the harsh climatic change or all sorts of hazards. Also with the remaining amount, I had to buy foodstuffs and other houshouseld items that I was lacking.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 o'clock, I was sick and resting in my room after taking some medicine. I was awakened by the continuous loud message notification on my phone. Being illiterate, I could not understood the messages and called my helper who ascertained that it was the transfer I had been eargly waiting. Joy filled my heart after receiving my transfer and I had to inform every member of the household about the good news. We all celebrated for receiving the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am leading a happy life after fulfilling my dream of owning an alternative source of income for my family. Previously, I depend on firewood selling which was low-paying and sometimes I could spend the whole day without getting a customer to purchase them. Through the transfer, I was able to start goat rearing job that is easy to do and will supplement my earning from firewood selling.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a firewood vendor at Bamba market centre. This jobs earns me KES 100 per day which I mainly use it to purchase food for my family of 2. My desire was to start goat rearing activity as an alternative source of income for the family. After receiving my transfer I spent KES 12800 to purchase 4 goats to start the livestock rearing. I also purchased 70 building poles and 10 iron sheets for KES 17320 this was for the construction of a new house. Currently, the one I have is about to collapse because most poles have rotten. I also bought sufficient food for KES 3000 with part of the remaining amount. Lastly, I am planning to use the remaining amount to settle labour cost for the construction of a new house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means purchasing goats for rearing. This is because my ambition is to achieve a good source of income that will sustain us. Currently I rely on subsistence farming for a living. My husband does casual jobs but he is quite old and he doesn't earn enough. It can take him 2 months to get a job and this means I have to hustle to make ends meet. In addition to this, I will renovate our house which has a leaking roof and damaged walls.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I enjoy this time because I do not take for granted seeing a new day. I know that despite all my challenges I still have a chance to make my life better.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is our biggest hardship. Living on a budget of less than 1000 shillings a month is really frustrating. I live in poverty because I do not have the means to change my situation. My husband and I are used to skip meals even for days because the farming we rely on is no longer productive.
