How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer because I have been able to build a more permanent house for my family. Even though I have not completed building it, I am optimistic that I will very soon. This will make the cleaning work more easier for my wife. Also, the transfers enabled me to purchase some new clothes for my family and as a result, we nowadays dress smartly than before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by sending transfers directly to the recipient and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent the all amount to build a more permanent house for my family. I bought all the necessary materials ranging from timber to sand. My wife is growing old and grows weaker as the days goes by and this made me settle on building a more permanent house so that it will be easier for her to clean it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home and I was outside relaxing at the compound when I heard my phone ringing notifying me of an SMS. I checked it and to my surprise, it was the SMS saying that we had received the lump sum amount from GiveDirectly. I became very happy on seeing this and I could not believe it. I called out my wife to come and check the SMS and she became very happy about receiving the good news. We celebrated together giving thanks to God and GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives. I have been able to start the construction of the house that I have always desired to build. When this house gets complete, my wife will be able to relax because she will no longer have to endure the struggle of smearing mud on the house. I will have hence reduced the work for her. We will also be able to live in a modern house just like some of our neighbors. The transfer also enabled me to buy maize that my family will consume for a while. I will hence not be having any worries about where to get money to buy them food. We have also been able to buy a few clothes for ourselves and hence we look good and different. I also plan to pay for the medical insurance coverage that I believe will help us in the future whenever we face any health challenges.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I used part of it in sawing timber that I am currently using in the construction of another house for us. I also bought three bags of maize for the consumption of my family and clothes for ourselves. If some money remains, I plan to use it in paying for my medical insurance cover, which is the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). The reason why I decided to build another house that is made of timber, is because my wife has become old and she is no longer able to smear mud on the house. We have been living in a mud house and she was facing a lot of difficulties doing the smearing because of her age. I also want to pay the medical insurance coverage so that in case we face any emergency, we will not be having any challenges with payment of the hospital bill. I was however not in a position to do the above especially to build a house because we did not have such a large sum of money to do so.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that we shall afford to plaster our house. Since our ages have advanced significantly, my wife finds it highly tiresome to smear our mud-walled house. Hence, GiveDirectly's transfer will be a great relief to her. Besides, we shall have a more decent house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I am sharing breakfast with my family. At this moment, virtually every family member is jovial since we would not have encountered instances that may attract annoyance. Besides, I greatly thank God for sustaining our good health.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is living and doing farming on less than 0.5 acres of land. As a subsistence farmer, I have been trying to keep some livestock while and planting crops. Unluckily, my family is forced to survive with relatively little food we get from our farm. Also, I cannot expand my farming projects due to the land inadequacy.
