How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer is purchasing a heifer. When I received the money we made a decision with my spouse and children to buy a heifer, We will get enough milk when it reproduces and cut the cost of buying milk.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The registration and the enrollment were done well and most of the people who received it spent well the transfer in our village spent it well. Most spent on paying the school fees and buying dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 17,000 on purchasing a heifer. What made me purchase this is because I always buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I will get enough milk in the future when it reproduces in the next few months. I will cut the cost of buying milk which is very expensive. I deposited KES 15,000 and bought a motorcycle on hirer purchase. This is subject to weekly installment of KES 2,5OO being paid for 18 months. I am so grateful because I get some income through this daily and I am able to meet my daily household basic need I have hope that I will own it fully when I fully paid the balance. I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing sofa set seats, tables, and three sacks of maize. The rest of the money I spent on clothes for my children and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was preparing to go and fetch firewood from the forest. I sell the firewood to hotels at the centre to earn some income to meet all my basic household items. I heard a ringtone message from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I stopped whatever I was doing to celebrate with my family. I did not go to fetch the firewood. I knew I would be able to buy a heifer which has always been my dream. I felt so happy and grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enabled us to fulfilled our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs and small scale farming. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it's only for household basic needs. I had no extra source of money. Sometimes I could go to cut the firewood in the forest and sell at the town. This earns me some money to meet other basic household needs. I had always wished to buy a dairy cow but I didn't had the money. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would fulfill my dream. I bought a heifer at a cost of KES 18,000. I know I would be able to get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk daily. This will enable me save some money to pay school fees. Currently I am so happy because I have hope that my family living standards would improve. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us achieve our dream.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The mainstay economic activity in our place is livestock keeping. Sometimes in 2011, there was an outbreak of lethal maize necrosis that ravaged our maize crops , to date the disease still exists and maize production has been a thing of the past. So we depend on livestock especially cows. At the moment I do not any, I sold the one I had to pay school fees for my children. I was so happy when I heard that give directly were coming to our place. My aspiration is to buy a dairy cow worth KES 35000. I will use the rest of the money to pay for school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was so elated when I heard that Give Directly were coming to our village to assist us. This is a lifetime opportunity and half of my problems will be solved. I am extremely happy. Thanks to Give Directly for remembering our village.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main problem I face currently is paying school fees. Schools were reopened last week and all my children were sent back home for school fees. I am a mother of little means and affording school fees is a big deal. Sometimes, I hold fundraising to raise the school fees but since I have done many times people have become so reluctant to come through for me.
