How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I never received the transfer because I am now a new person. I was able to buy a second-hand motorcycle using my first transfer and without GiveDirectly, this would not have been possible. Due to this, I no longer do some odd jobs around the neighborhood like before. Having a stable source of income has enabled me to cater for my family needs on time. Also, I nowadays have enough time to spend with my family in the evening.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in their operations as they are transparent and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 27000 from my transfer to pay school fees for my wife. We decided on this as a family since she was already through with her course work but had not been able to sit for her examinations due to huge fee arrears. In addition to this, we bought two goats at KES 6500. These are assets that I can easily sell when faced with financial crisis. Also, I spent around KES 6500 on farming. I hired a tractor for farm preparation purposes and bought some quality seeds. On the remaining amount, I bought a table as we had none, some decent clothes for my children and food to last us for some time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around six while still asleep when my neighbor came asking whether I received the tranfers. Because I hadn't heard the message tone ring I only checked my phone and to surprise there 55000 shillings lay before me. I was very excited and showed my wife the Mpesa confirmation SMS and we immediately woke full of excitement and energy. We then withdrew the money around 11am and were very grateful to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is owning my own motorcycle. This was unexpected because I had lost my earlier this year due to Covid 19.After loosing my job I tried my luck as a casual motorcycle taxi but it has been quite tough because the motorcycle owners would micromanage and suspect me most of the time. As a an orphan, I had requested my aunty to lend me a loan to buy my own motorcycle because she a member of the merry go round groups but it was impossible. I am also glad because since I received the money because my wife is happier than before because I can now buy adequate food. Initially, I couldn't afford to feed her and life was quite unbearable because of conflicts but now there is peace.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I normally work as a motorcycle taxi as a casual worker. When I received the transfers I took a motorcycle loan with a down payment of 300 USD from the transfers and repayment of 17.2USD per week. I prefer my own bodaboda because initially I used to work for people who micromanaged me and would fire me up abruptly. Right now, I am flexible because I have my own motorcycle. I also spent 34USD on10 chicken layers because they are a quick source of income. 55USD was spent on two sofa set seats and my house can now accommodate 10 people in one sitting. I spent 15USD on a tractor for hire because it's a common means of cultivation and the soil being clayish it's difficult to use man power. I also spent 20USD on maize meal and household items and the rest on debt repayment.
