How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I never received these transfers, I would not have peace of mind. I would feel like an outcast from my village. I am thankful that I received the transfers and I have been relieved of some of my problems.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a very good job in our village. We are not suffering as we used to. Some of us are sleeping on a matress for the first time because we received these transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the money to buy iron sheets and window frames because I want to build a house. I used some of the money to buy bags of maize since I received the money at a time when my family did not have enough food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got the message at around 4am whilst I was sleeping. When I read the message, I got up immediately from my mat and started preparing for town to cash the money
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used to sleep on a floor without anything rather than an old raincoat that my uncles gave me and cover myself with a mosquito net, at the moment am sleeping on a good matress with a good blanket.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought 15 sheets of iron sheets, two blankets, matress and 2 bags of maize. I also repaid my loan.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will save me from the embarrassment of begging from people as I am in deep starvation and I rely on begging from other people for food. This money will allow me to buy enough food for my household and be able to feed my family. Again, I sleep on a mat that is not comfy and my house leaks so badly. I am hoping to maintain my house and buy a mattress and other beddings so that I sleep comfortably.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest whenever I find piece work, get paid some money and be able to buy some food for my family
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Last year I did not harvest enough food due to lack of fertilizers as a result the yield was poor which has resulted in my household starving.
