How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My husband is the only provider for our family, but he struggles to provide for us because his income from baking jobs is insufficient. In order to better our family's financial situation, I intend to open a grocery store and set aside a portion of the proceeds. After a year, I will use the money I make to turn the business into a more lucrative retail shop. It will be lot simpler to support our family if we both have a source of income.. With two soures of income it will be much easier
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The wisest course of action is to give us money and let us determine how to use it. It has made life easier in our community as most people have started businesses, taken care of other needs that they could not, and even enrolled their children in school. Since everyone only praises the organization for its excellent work, I am unaware of anything they are not doing right.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse is caring for his three siblings, whose secondary school tuition was covered in full with the first transfer. Although our four young children have not yet joined secondary school, they will do so shortly. Due to the fact that my husband is our only source of income and works as a baker, it is difficult for us to satisfy all of our needs. In order to increase our household income, we spent $195 on two goats, a cow, and three ducks. We intend to sell some of them when they give birth. For my two children's entire primary school year, we spent $50 in school fees. Purchasing food was difficult due to the prolonged drought this year that caused an increase in the cost of food commodities. We are grateful that Give Directly came to our aid. We purchased enough food with the remaining $286 to last us for a considerable amount of time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfers meant so much to me. I was outside the compound doing laundry, I had to stop at some point to confirm what was going on in my neighborhood as there was alot of celebrations in form of wailing and singing. Upon confirmation from my mpesa, I had to join them celebrating as it came at the right time when I was in a financial crisis as I had so many family's needs to fulfil at that moment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a savings account for my future use. Before the transfers, I never thought of having savings as it was from hand to mouth, unlike now I have a business which is picking up so well, with the profits, I will manage to expand it into a very big business with time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used Kshs 23 ,000 to build a house as the one I initially had was leaking, during rainy seasons, I had to shift all the valuable items into one room, this was quiet tiresome. I used Kshs 10,000 to pay school fees for my first born son who was joining form one in a day school. Getting food had been the greatest challenge in my family, I therefore used Kshs 10,000 to buy dry foods, this lasted us a whole month. I started a grocery business with Kshs 10,000. Since it has high demand, I am hoping to save the profits in a lock savings account to be used in the future for paying school fees for my son who just joined secondary school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of four members and we are all living in a one-bedroom house. It lacks privacy and I have no room to accommodate my visitors. I normally request accommodation of my visitors from my neighbours. I will build a three bedroom house which is spacious enough for my family. This will cost KES 150000. I will now be free to welcome my visitors anytime. My husband and I are all casual labourers earning approximately KES 300 per day each. This is not enough for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband got a job with one of the bakeries in kale in January 2022. The family has now been taking two meals per day hoping that with time we shall be taking three meals per day. My husband job brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a job is the current challenge I am facing. I work as a casual work and the daily income is very low that it cannot meet the family needs. This has made my family take one meal per day.
