How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I run a tailoring shop in addition to my business of selling raw food. In order to enhance demand and, maybe, win a bid to provide schools with all of their uniforms, I plan to open a second tailoring shop close to a school. Since we are just starting a family and still have a ways to go, we need to improve our financial situation before having more kids who will require more resources to support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, thanks to the organization, a lot has changed in the community. For the first time, I encountered a company that provides free money and then monitors its use. This encourages people who may have wasted money to work toward using the funds they still have in more meaningful ways. Additionally, it fosters the unity of families by promoting consensus among them regarding financial matters.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Originally, our objective was to renovate our home, but later, after consulting with my spouse, we decided to buy some land so that we could expand. We had little room for farming as a result of the compression. I am happy that we were able to buy an acre of land for $400 to use for farming. Hopefully, we shall have a better harvest to feed our family and even extra to sellWe invested $70 in two goats to be raised with the intention of selling some of them later if we needed money instantly, especially because we have a child who will soon join secondary school. I used $40 to make it easier for me to get to my sister's funeral and to pay for additional expenditures when she passed away. I spent $8 on my son's school fees and the remaining money on groceries for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was cooking in one of the evenings, I heard a message popping into my phone which was at a distance. I decided to ignore the message and proceeded with my cooking until I heard it ringing because someone was calling. I received the call and afterward checked the message that popped in sometimes back. I jumped in happiness after realizing that it was the GiveDirectly transfer message. My heart melted on thanksgiving and I was unable to proceed with the cooking thus ordering my daughter to carry on from where I left.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that was brought by the transfer is the presence of a toilet at my home. Initially, as a family, we used to go to the bush which was not only risky and unhealthy but also deprived me of my privacy while in the bush fearing being in contact with my children. Even if the toilet is incomplete, it will not take long to complete.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before getting the money, I had already planned my priorities. When I received and withdrew the money, I first constructed a pit latrine. This is because it was unhealthy and shameful for both the children and me to go to the bush for nature calls. It was more shameful if we receive a visitor and ask for the same services. Based on that, I used KES 7000.00 to buy some of the items for construction and the contractor asked for a labor charge of KES 25000.00. I also bought some food and saved the remaining amount which is catering for the toilet construction.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Improving my household's health is what it means receiving this money to me. Currently, I do not have a toilet at my homestead and when I received visitors, I feel ashamed because I have to seek help from my neighbor. Besides, it scares me because during rain seasons it is easy to get contamination and suffer from diseases such as cholera which is fatal. It is this reason that, I have wished to build one for my family. I am planning to spend the first transfer to attain this goal so that I avoid this menace. I will use the second transfer to buy a new sewing machine so as to replace the faulty one as well as purchase more materials for my tailoring business. This will help me to serve my customers better and earn a living.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Life has been tough for my household. However, the coming of GiveDirectly has renewed my hope in me. This has indeed brought joy and happiness because, once I receive the transfer I will be able to achieve my dream. Something that I look forward to.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the major challenge that I am currently facing. My spouse lost his job as scrape metal dealer when the government seized their operations 1 year ago. He now works as a casual earning less than KES 8000 a month. The money is not enough for him and here at home. I require KES 400 to cater for the daily needs. Due to this, I have been struggling to make ends meet.
