How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The hospital emergency for my husband disrupted the noble plans I had with my household before receiving the transfer. We had a lot to do; among them was to demolish the small old kitchen and construct a new one because I already had a better main house and to buy a large capacity water tank to collect the rainwater from the roof that would spare us the struggle of frequently fetching from the river during dry seasons. I still hope the goals will eventually come to pass since my plan is to resume the search for money that will enhance picking from where we left once they discharge my husband from the hospital.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a great job that elevated us, from the great poverty we were wallowing in. Giving us money enhanced coherent planning determined by the challenges we had in our households. Like any other person in the village, I am happy and content with the entire process that saw everyone enrolled and received the same amount of money. I hope they will implement the same in other villages and ensure everyone gets the same opportunity to transform their households.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received the second transfer when my husband was not feeling well. He was at home at that moment and after some weeks; they admitted him to date. The enormous hospital bill changed the plans we had when we paid approximately KES 20000 to cover part of the medical cost. Even though he is still in the hospital at the moment, I am glad that his health status has improved with time, and hopefully the hospital will discharge him soon. I paid KES 15000 from the remaining amount to the school fees for my two children in a private primary school. Clearing the entire term's fees has relieved me and given me more time to work hard in raising more money to meet other household bills. I also bought a sheep worth KES 4000 to add to the preexisting flock. Investment in livestock was the easiest I could do since I have enough grazing fields and their growth and multiplication is fast. In the future, I will sell the offspring to pay school fees for my children. I spent the remaining amount on buying clothes and other household goods for my family of four.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 Pm, I was at the hospital taking care of my spouse who was admitted to Tenwek hospital When my neighbor called me to inform me that they have received the transfer from GiveDirectly. When we were done taking, I checked my phone and there was a message confirming that I have received some amount from GiveDirectly. This was one of the happiest days of my life. I needed some money to purchase dome medicines for my spouse. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly support came at the right time. I used the paybill numbers to pay for medication and later withdraw the remaining money to meet family expenses.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is being in a position to purchase the drugs that were needed from the hospital. This was the priority since some of the drugs needed to be purchased from the chemist. This could have made us sell some of our assets. We were struggling since there were no savings in our accounts. I am a teacher and my spouse is a driver. I have not been employed by the teacher's service commission and I do contracts. The amount of money that I got was so small and we were not in a position to save any money. We were able to pay for the national hospital and insurance fund. This helped us to settle some of the hospital bills. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly came to our area at the right time when we needed support. My spouse was discharged from Tenwek Hospital and later transfer to Nairobi for further check-ups. Currently, he is doing well and waiting to be discharged back home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on medication for my spouse. I am so happy because I was able to get the drugs for my spouse on time due to the availability of money. This could have strained us to the extent of selling some of the assets. I spent KES 4,500 on purchasing a got. This is my investment since goats reproduce twice per year. I spent KES 25,000 on completing the construction of the latrine that I had started with my saving. Currently, it looks decent and I am so grateful because this could have taken quite some time. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items that I was lacking. I am so grateful because GiveDictely has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I graduated sometimes last year October having undertaken a primary teacher course at Bomet Teachers College and I have been teaching at Twilight Academy in the nearby Sigor town. Last year the government came up with a regulation that requires us to upgrade our course to align our skills with the newly launched Competency based Curriculum. It is a mandatory for us to undergo the course so as to be eligible for government employment. I should have undergone the program last year when it was launched but because of lack of money I was not able. I am so elated with this help from Give Directly since I am now certain of undertaking the course. I intend to use KES 50000 pay for the needed school fees.We will use the rest of the money to buy a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had a refer in a paper I had failed in college. On September last year I was able to resit the paper and I passed well. I was so excited when the result came out and I have been able to obtain the TSC number something I could get without having passed all the exams. Quite an achievement for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We are very prone to water shortage. Our area is semi arid and during dry season we have to travel for about 2 km to fetch them. It always give me a lot of stress since it is so tiresome to go for long distance to fetch the water. The challenge is further excerbated by the lack of a reservoir to harvest the rain water and so I do not have the option but to cover the long distance and carry the water on my back.
