How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better house. We used to live in a small house which could not host all the family comfortably. Whenever I had many visitors there no enough space to host them and this was so demoralizing. I do small scale farming and also have poultry keeping project. This earns me an income to meet my daily household expenditure and also pay school fees for my children. I did not had an extra income to build a spacious house. At some point I was also employed as a saloonist where I used to make people's hair and get paid in a commission. Currently I have a spacious and decent house. I no longer get stress up whenever I have visitors at home because I have a spacious house. I have peace of mind and I am able to do my daily activities without any stress. My children are so happy because they have their own rooms where they can do assignment without any disturbance. GiveDirectly has change our living standard and we are so grateful.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my own opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and pay school fees for children in various schools. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better and spacious house . This is because we used to live in a small house which could not host all the family comfortably. Currently I have a spacious house. My children are so happy because they have their own rooms where they can do assignment without any disturbance. The rest of the money I bought seeds/potatoes and planted on my farm. I have always wished to start horticulture farming but I did not had the capital. This was the best feelings ever since I was in a position to do so. The harvest is for consumption and the surplus I will sell to earn an income.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got a notification on my phone that I had received a message and upon checking who the message was from, I got so excited to learn that I had received my first transfer that GiveDirectly had promised to send us during the enrolment. I felt so happy and started celebrating with the rest of my family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The dairy cow that I am currently keeping in my compound has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. I opted in purchasing it because I knew I would achieve a lot because we all know it has various benefits. First, I am planning to sell the milk to the local markets and those will be my major source of income. I am pretty sure this money will enable me to pay school fees for my children on time and meeting their needs without struggling. Alos with the remaining litre, they will be for my family's consumption which will boost their health. I thank Give Directly for empowering me because I wouldn't have achieved any of these without their help
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying a dairy cow worthy of KES 20000. I later bought some iron sheets, timber, nails for the construction of a new house because the previous one was very small and in poor condition. I later spent KES 5000 of the transfer on paying school fees for my children. I then bought some utensils, beddings and to replace the old ones. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs and decent clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Life has been so hard for me since I am a single mother of one and I cannot secure a job because I do not have any formal education. I started a hairdressing business 3 years ago when I had completely run out of options to sustain myself. I would like to offer more services in this business but I do not have sufficient space and manpower. I am now happy that GiveDirectly has enrolled me, there's more hope for my business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. I usually have a busy day in my business, which is usually so tiresome.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a single parent with no job was the biggest hardship of my life. I could not provide for my family. We had to depend on my parents.
