How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better and spacious house for my family. I used to live in grass thatched house which could not host all the family comfortably. This was so challenging and demoralizing because whenever we had visitors there was no space to host them. We do small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. My spouse do casual jobs and the small income that he gets is for other basic household needs including paying school fees for our children. There was no extra money to build a better house. Currently we have build a better and spacious house for my family. I am so grateful because my children have a good place to sleep and do there homework. I no longer shy to welcome visitors like before because I have a spacious room to host them. I am so much grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and pay school fees for their children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to complete the construction of the house that I started building using the previous transfer. We used to live in a small grass thatched house but now we have a spacious house. I also started horticulture farming, I bought seeds and fertilizers, Currently I have food for the family and I sell the rest at the market to earn an income to support my family in meeting the additional household items. Finally I bought clothes for my children. They were so happy in that the had new clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 1pm after lunch while relaxing inside my house while in my weeks of pregnancy. That's when I heard my phone ring, and on checking my phone it was GD transfers. I was overwhelmed with joy, immediately prepared and went to the nearest MoMo agent and withdrew the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life and my family is ability to building a better and spacious house through the GD transfers. This is because the one we had was becoming tiny each year as children increased. Initially, I had desired to build one for the past seven years but I couldn't. My husband usually worked as a casual laborer and the money gotten would be used for food. Even though we did farming it was almost affected by long dry spells. There is increased happiness because through the transfers I have been able to buy latest clothing and adequate food for my family. We have grown healthier and happier because of the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 on building a two roomed semi permanent house because I had only a tiny grass thatched house which could only accommodate one bed. Coincidentally I received a bundle of joy five days after the transfers. I also spent KES 6400 on two sacks of maize because I didn't have any maize stock left. Majorly, we depend on farming of short term seasonal crops like onions and tomatoes for food because our area place is marked by long dry spells which affects food production. I also spent KES 10,000 on latest expensive clothing fashion which are more decent unlike before when we could afford only second hand ones we are a bit cheaper. I also spent KES 5,000 on food and other household items in order to ensure adequacy of food for me because I just gave birth. The rest I have kept for upkeep and household consumption.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I work in a nearby quarry mining stones for road construction. We sell the stones for USD. 2 per tonne. It takes the whole day to mine the one tonne when the weather is good. At the moment I feel this work exhausts me a lot and it has no good return for the energy invested in the work. With these transfers I would like to start a vegetables business since i have a small garden where I can grow them and be selling in the nearby town.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My work in the quarry is so exhaustive and sometimes we work under harsh weather conditions to meet the targets of the day for good money. This drains my energy a lot because the food I get also is not wholesome for such a physical activity so the happiest part of my day is in the morning when am still energetic and my hard day is yet to start.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am currently facing the biggest hardship in my life since I am working so hard but I don't seem to be getting a good reward for it. My children still do not get enough food, we do not have a decent house despite the efforts I make to get money.
