How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because it's only through the transfers that I finally managed to build a decent house. It would have taken years for me to gather enough financial resources to build a decent and iron roofed house. Had I not received the transfers, I would still be living in my grass thatched hut. I am at peace now having moved into my new iron roofed house. In addition to this, I am also owning some goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I could not afford to buy them at my own cost. To me these are living assets which upon reproducing, they will increase in number and help me out in case of a financial need. Raising fees for my children will not be a challenge since I can sell the offsprings and get some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in giving us the unconditional transfers so as to reduce the poverty that we were in. The transfers have impacted our lives positively because at least we could now afford the basic needs like shelter, clothing and food. We mainly depended on burning and selling charcoal as the only source of income with meagre earnings. It was not enough even for daily foodstuffs. We are now sheltering in decent and iron roofed houses and providing enough foodstuffs to our families. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well other than the huge positive impact that it has brought into our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had acquired a piece of land that I had not completed its payment due to some financial constraints. When I received the second transfer, I spent part of it to clear the outstanding amount. I am now owning this land and free to do my own projects like farming. In addition to this, I also paid for my children's school fees. They would have been discontinued was it not for the transfers. I am glad that they were allowed back to continue with their studies without interruptions on school fees. I spent the remaining amount to finish a project of building a decent house. I purchased the remaining materials which include timber, nails and iron sheets. I finished the construction and moved into my new iron roofed house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got a message from GiveDirectly early in the morning. Since I could not comprehend it, I called my helper who informed me that I had received KES 55000 in my Mpesa account. I was happy for the financial help from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am now owning livestock through the transfer. I bought two heifers that I am currently rearing in my homestead. These are assets which I can readily depend on in case of a financial need. Owning these livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life because as they reproduce, they will increase in number and have many of them. I will sell the milk that they will be producing thus earning an income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the first transfer on buying livestock, two heifers which I am currently keeping in my homestead. My expectation is that these heifers will reproduce and have many of them. Through them, I will be benefiting from the milk they will produce, for my family's consumption and sell the surplus thus earning an income. I spent the remaining amount to clear a debt of a plot of land that I had acquired for farming. I am now owning the piece of land and free to do my farming.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
"Receiving this money means getting back my sight. I am widow who has been having eyes problems for almost 1 year now. Due to financial challenges I have failed to seek proper medication from referred hospital. I was supposed to undergo an eyes operation since last year but I failed. I am planning to spend first transfer to seek treatment in pertained hospital and cater for all the expenses e.g bills and transport. Besides treatment, I will use the extra amount to purchase 10 goats, this will generate income to me because I can sell them when they multiple."
What is the happiest part of your day?
"Morning becomes my happiest part of the day. This is because it is at this time when I thank God for giving me opportunity to see another day."
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
"Sickness has been my biggest challenge. Since my eyes problem emerged I have been in and out of hospital. This has limited me from performing some duties e.g cooking because I can not see properly."
