How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to complete the two bed-sitters and rent them out. Each bedsitter would earn the family $25 each. The income received would enable me to complete the toilet project and cater to our basic needs. This would mean that my husband will not be frustrated because of the monthly deductions of the money he borrowed to start the project of building the rentals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing well by providing support through cash transfers. My family has been straining because of the debts that drain all of my husband’s monthly salary. The support program has helped us complete the project and cater to our needs. Hoping to rent out the complete houses, my husband will complete the loan without the family straining in terms of food and school fees. I hope the organization will continue providing unconditional cash transfers, which enable people to cater to different needs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is a high school teacher and I am a stay-at-home parent. Together, we live with our two children and my two brothers. The support program has brought a big difference in my life. The first transfer came when we were broke and my first project was building a kitchen for $250 and a toilet for $160. The toilet was incomplete because had to pay school fees of $90 and the remaining $100 was used to buy food and water. The other transfer of $220 was used to complete the plastering and flooring of two bed-sitters that we started years ago, but due to lack of funds unable to complete them. I also paid $50 school fees for the rest of the term for all the children in school and used $50 to buy more food and water for the construction project. My sister’s child had a medical bill, and I contributed $50 and used $20 as transport to visit her while they admitted her. I spent the remaining $150 to buy the whole family some new clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am a Muslim, and we were were observing a month of prayer when my transfer was received. I was overjoyed when I received confirmation of my transfer because I was in desperate need of funds at the time. I could not control myself since it was one of the rare opportunities in my life. Fortunately, I felt confident that I would be able to meet not only my children's food requirements but also their educational needs. My family actually did not have any food at that time because we had already depleted all that we had. I am grateful that the transfer aided my family in our time of need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For years, I had been longing to build a new kitchen but this was not working out. I did not have some steady source of income and whatever income I was getting, could only help us obtain food. However, courtesy of the transfer, I have been able to start building a kitchen which is near completion. This has come to pass and it has greatly improved my life because I do not have to prepare meals in an open area. Moreover, I have built a pit latrine and this has saved my image among my community members.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I immediately after receiving my transfer, I spent KES 13,000 on buying sheets and nails for building a new kitchen. My previous one was worn out and on the verge of collapse. As a result, I had been cooking outside, where the weather could cause us problems. In addition, I spent KES 12,000 to construct a pit latrine, since I did not have one. Furthermore, I spent KES 10,000 to repay loans I had obtained to cover school tuition for my two school-going children. I had previously been having trouble raising funds for their school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Human waste disposal (open defecation) has become an issue since we now live in a shopping center. My desire is to use my first transfer to build a pit latrine that we can use as a family. This will protect my children from even getting diseases. The remaining cash will go towards completion of my kitchen structure and reviving my retail shop business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After purchasing land and some building materials, my dream of owning a rental house stalled due to insufficient funds. It's only in December 2021 that I was able to pick it up again. This brought joy to my life and I even took some photographs to showcase my achievement.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I borrowed a loan from my community Sacco of 20,000 KES so I can plaster my rental house. Paying it back has been stressful because I do not have an income. My wish is to clear it and also send my two children to a private school for quality education.
