How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a goal that I would wish to accomplish shortly which is to start a retail shop business in my village. For now, I am jobless and I feel there is a need for me to start earning a living for the sake of my school-going children. Also, I believe that through the business, I will be able to fend for all my family's needs without struggling like I used to do.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job by ensuring that they visited every household in my entire village. The officers made sure that we received the cash timely as they had promised during the enrolment period. I, therefore, can't point out anything that needs to be changed so far from their end.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying decent and modern bedding such as two beds and mattresses a total of $310. For years, my nine children and I have been sleeping on the floor since we couldn't afford to acquire new ones. It has never been easy at all because we used to experience unending back pains which have been affecting our day-to-day activities. It is now a relief to us as a whole because we no longer complain of the pains, also my children can now concentrate at school. Additionally, I purchased a solar panel at $38 which has replaced the candles that we have been using. On some days, we couldn't afford to buy them hence we could stay in the dark which I felt was not good for our well-being. For now, my children can study at night comfortably without any hiccups like before. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying food for my ten family members. Noways, I no longer have to borrow from neighbours like I used to do courtesy of GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 pm when I had gone to grieve with my neighbors who lost their beloved one when I heard friends saying that they had received their first transfer from GiveDirectly. Since I had left my phone at home, I became uneasy and left for home to confirm. On reaching home, I asked my son to check on my phone if I had received the transfer like the rest. Lucky enough I was among the ones who had received the money. My heart was filled with happiness for knowing that I was accepted by the organization and I am in their system.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can proudly talk about is the fact that initially my house was leaking and I was living in an insecure house since it had collapsed on one side. As of now, it is no longer leaking and I live comfortably out of fear of the house collapsing. It is now safe and this is because of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I first wanted to renovate my house which had collapsed on one side. I bought 30 pieces of iron sheets for KES 33000.00, 7 ridges, nails, and some roofing timbers. Thereafter, I saw it prudent to make enough stock of foodstuff to ensure my family has an access to food. I bought three bales of maize flour and addition of seven packets of maize flour of 2kg each.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious and decent house for my family. I am planning to use KES 45,000 to build a two-bedroom house for my family. I live under a grass-thatched house with a leaking roof making the structure pathetic especially during the rainy seasons. I will later use KES 30,000 to cater for my children school fees. My children in secondary school have been missing many classes because of the lack of money to pay their school fees. Paying this amount once they resume studies means they will have enough study time with their teachers translating to improved academic performance. Getting a spacious house and at the same seeing my children in school will give me the desired peace of mind.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Recently, I have developed a trend of making stories with neighbours and this has reduced the boredom and brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Constant headaches and swelling on my body has denied me peace for long. Sometimes my body gets itchy and starts swelling and this comes with pain. I have sought some help from different hospitals in town without success. Getting the desired medicine comes with lots of costs making it unaffordable.
