How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No. I have accomplished most of my goals in life through the transfer that I received from GiveDirectly. I had desired to own a piece of land to improve my farming so that I may have a sustainable food supply for my family. In addition, I currently reside in a spacious and more comfortable house something that had restored my happiness in life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in helping the poor households in our society with unconditional cash transfer. In addition, the officers provided us with proper advice on how best to use our transfer to improve our lives before we could decide on ourselves. Through the transfer, most of the poor households have improved their lives. I am very grateful for the transfer. I do not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my second transfer to purchase building materials including 95 buildings pole, 20 iron sheets, and timber. This was for the construction of a decent and spacious house for my family. The one I had earlier was very small to fully accommodate me and my family of 5 members. Similarly, we were using it as a kitchen at the same time making it inhabitable because of the constant smoke from the fireplace. The remaining assisted me in purchasing enough food for my family since there is famine in our area.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Due to the drought conditions in our area, we are forced to spend most of the time looking for water. I always wake up early in the morning to go to the water point. I had left my phone in the house since it has low power. I did not check my phone until 6 pm because I was very busy with my household activities. I was surprised to see a mpesa message indicating that I had received the transfer. I was overwhelmed with joy for receiving my transfer since I had a lot of goals to achieve.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a landowner something that will ensure I have enough food harvest for my family. I will be able to practice crop farming on my virgin land where I will be able to harvest sufficient farm produce. I am optimistic that I will finally solve the problem of food insecurity in my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES. 40,000 to purchase virgin land for myself. This is because the piece of land where I to do farming had low fertility rate hence I was yielding a poor harvest. I could one get 2 sacks of maize the food would take the family 2 months before it got over. The rest of the year I was struggling with casual jobs to provide food for the family. I also bought 3 goats at KES. 2500 each this is an alternative source of livelihood for me. In addition, I bought a mattress for KES. 4000 this is because the one I had earlier was old and torned something that make it uncomfortable. The remaining amount assists me to purchase food.
