How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to have my shop after I spent my second transfer in starting a duvet business so that potential customers can find it easily accessible. So far the business has picked though I market and sell it door to door which is a bit strenuous.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by enrolling poor households. In addition, everything that we were informed by Givedirectly officers was delivered. However, some household members were left out after being enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, we had planned to build a house for my son since he didn't have a place to spend the night and also a conducive environment to study. With Kshs.20,000 we bought all construction materials i.e Iron sheets, nails, timber, and furniture, and also labor inclusive. I also bought a calf with Ksh.10,000 which was an addition to my livestock. With Kshs.10,000, I started a duvet business after doing market research. I bought five duvets with initial capital but after selling all I got promising profit and saw a need to add ten more duvets which am still selling but with an improved profit margin and can cater for some of the house bills easily. With the remaining amount, I bought food and clothes for my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9 am. I was in the merry go round group that we started in our village. When I heard people in the group saying that the have received the money. Within no time I heard a message tone from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money. I immediately called my spouse and inform him of the good news. I knew I would be able to buy a sofa set seats.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased sofa set seats. I used to borrow from neighbors whenever I had visitors. This was so demoralizing and stressful. I had to return them back immediately the visitors leave. I depend on casual jobs and small scale farming at home. The income is so small and I was not in a position to purchase seats. I had always wished to own but I didn't had the money. I had build a better house but there was no seats. Sometimes I had to shy off welcoming visitors into the house. I depend on casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it's only for household basic needs. I had no other source of income. The idea of purchasing seats was always in my mind. Thanks to GiveDirectly for enabling me to achieve this. Currently I no longer stress up or shy away.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the transfer to purchased sofa set seats. I had always wished to own it but I didn't had the money. I bought a heifer at the cost of 10,000. This will enable me to get enough milk and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I plough my farm and seeds. The rest of the money I used it to purchase food and clothes. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I would like to add my cows to enable me to earn some income in the future through the sale of milk, so when I receive this money I will buy two calves with KES 50000, also I will use another KES 20000 to renovate and buy furniture to my house. I will also use KES 20000 to start my enterprise (hotel). Now that I am struggling to provide food to my family I will therefore budget KES 10000 to buy food and clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of the day, When I am done with my daily chores I would visit my friends and have a chat.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Hunger and food have been the biggest hardship I have been experiencing, this area is no longer productive and maize disease has been a big problem to us.
