How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal was to own a piece of land since the area we are currently living in s prone to drought and famine. It no longer supports any crop which leads to food insecurity. I thank GiveDirectly for the aid that has made me achieve this dream. My new goal is to construct a house on the land that I bought and to start farming. With this, I will have a reliable food supply for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for enrolling me into the program, this has enabled me to accomplish my desire something that I am grateful for. I didn't see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 to purchase a one-acre piece of land. My plan is to use this land for farming to produce enough food for the family. The place where are currently is less productive because of the constant drought and famine that we experience. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around exactly 9 AM when I was at my daily hustle when my phone started ringing so loudly. I was even surprised because it was too early for me to receive any notification from anyone. Due to curiosity, I decided to check who it was. I confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally received the money that I had patiently been waiting for. I was so happy and my heart was full, for this huge support into my life. I will live to remember this day!
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the transfers have empowered me to acquire a piece of land. I had been longing to purchase it for quite some time but due to the financial hardships I am facing, I couldn't afford it. Upon receiving the transfers, I had to fulfill this as my priority which I made it. My previous land was so infertile and in every harvesting season, I could acquire a very low yield of just a 50Kg bag. This was could only last for three weeks considering my family is comprised of five members. Sometimes I used to lease my friend's farms which were relatively expensive. My spouse and I have been struggling to fulfill this dream but because we all relied on casual jobs it wasn't achievable, I am now feeling so thankful because there will be a huge relief for my household since I am assured of getting plenty of yields. Also, my children will have their place to build their homes besides being an asset to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a plot of land 1actre at KES 30000, and I am glad I have an asset that I can lean on anytime together with my generation. The previous piece of and has been so unfertile and very small as a result, I ended up harvesting very low yields. I also bought boosted my retail shop business of KES 15000 and for now, the business is doing so well becasue I have enough stock. In addition, I cleared school fees of KES 2000 for my two children who are in primary. They are currently studying without any disturbances like before. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough for my family and some other household items that I have been lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my children. I will achieve this through livestock keeping.I plan to spend the first transfer to buy two indigenous cows and four goats. As they multiply I will sell at a profit and use the earnings to pay school fees, uniforms and stationary. The remaining amount will help me to add stock to my kiosk and cater for other basic needs such as food .
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is when I receive may customers at my kiosk and make good sales. The fact that this where I get my income from to supplement what my husband earns from charcoal production , I indeed feel happy .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is food insecurity. This is as a result of unreliable rainfall in our area. It has been three seasons since we had good harvest.Due to this I have been struggling to cater to cater education of my family because most of the money my husband gets from charcoal production (2400 KES) per month goes into buying food.
