How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to buy two more chairs for my household. I also have a goal to send my child who recently completed his secondary school education to college. I want to buy more chairs so that it can be enough for all of us plus our visitors to sit on. My child has been at home for quite some time now and he needs to join college. I was not able to do the above with the transfer money that I got from GiveDirectly since I had too many needs. I hence decided to subdivide the money among those needs which included building another house and clearing school fee balances for my other three children who are in secondary school. I usually do the business of buying and selling vegetables and I plan to save up some of the money that I make from the business so that I can use in fulfilling my goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly staff are very friendly and they talked to us in a polite and respectful manner. They explained to us well what the program was all about and we were able to understand well what the program was all about. They are also very free and fair in the way they enrol people since they do not accept bribes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the recent transfer money on paying school fees for my daughter who is in her second year of secondary education. I spent KES 12000 on her school fees. She had been sent home due to failure to clear her school fees. I was not able to do so before with the first transfer money because I decided to first clear the balances for my two sons who are currently in their final year of secondary education. The school had demanded that the balances for the final year students be cleared completely for them to continue with their studies smoothly. Paying school fees has always been my biggest challenge since I do not have a stable source of income. I only depend on my business of vegetable vending to raise money to pay school fees for my four children. I am thus so much thankful to GiveDirectly for the support that the gave me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was alone at home when I took my phone at around 9.30 am to check what time it was when I realized that I had an unread message. On reading it, I realized that I had received the transfer that I had been waiting for. I started singing happily to celebrate the good news that had just come in. I thanked God for this great support and with the plans, I had in place, I had to go and withdraw as I needed to start the construction work within the same week.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Living in a one-room house has its challenges especially when one has male children. I would at times want to change clothes especially after being rained on but had to remain with the same clothes when my children are around. With the house that is almost being completed, I am happy that I will always enjoy my privacy and even have a separate room where visitors can sleep. Being able to achieve this within a short time has made my life different from how it was before and I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I spent KES 50000 to buy all the necessary building materials to use in building a more spacious house for my family. We settled on this as a family since the one we were living in was small and could not accommodate us comfortably hence we had no privacy. I still have KES 5000 that I am planning to use in meeting any emerging issues.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Now that I am living in a single grass touched house, I will build an iron sheet house with about $400, start poultry farming with about $200, pay school fees with &200, set $100 for food and clothing and save the remaining $100. I rely on casual jobs which earns me little that cannot enable me to develop and sustain myself.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I wake up early in the morning with good health I thank my God for seeing another day, this part of the day makes me happy. I know I have my children who look up to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees and food for my family has not been easy for me. I had been struggling a lot making me not to do much in life as well as development.
