How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Being a salonist, it would be my biggest dream to expand my business by building my own space, where I wouldn't have to pay rent. Aside from that, I am hoping to add to my livestock, with some more goats, cows and possibly poultry as well, to supplement our income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Not many organisations can accurate quantify how to help society, but GiveDirectly have managed to do just that. I have not felt more thought off nor dignified, than I have dealing with GiveDirectly and their staff. All I would ask is they continue to provide their services to countless more, for many more years to come. They are without fault in my humble opinion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers from GiveDirectly partially went to boosting my businesses. I have a budding salon in Mombasa, as well as selling thrift clothes on the side, at the same stall. I injected some of the money there as capital, which helped me stock up on a few more things, it also catered for my rent there of KES. 4,500. My husband who is a casual labourer in Mombasa, has built us a home where he was allocated some land by his father, and that has been the salvation of us both and our 3 year old child, since we need not pay rent. Finally, we bought two goats, a male and a female, whom we are believing are the start of a large flock of livestock in future. The funds sent to us by GiveDirectly were nothing short of a miracle and we will always hold GiveDirectly in a treasured place in our hearts.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was from taking shower at around 7 in the morning when I received the two messages informing me that I had received my first cash transfers. I was overwhelmed with joy and I remember saying a special prayer. Later called all my family family and informed them about the news. After the discussion on how to spend the cash, I decided to withdrew the cash the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the financial support has empowered me to own goats that I am currently keeping in my compound. I settle for the goats trusting that very soon they will increase in number and have many of them. I plan to sell some in future so that I can take my only son to school since he is still young. I am certain the goats are the only valuable assets that would help study till he graduates. Apart from that, I will be able to settle my bills on time since for now, I am jobless.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the first transfers on purchasing iron sheets at KES 20000, building poles at KES 2000, nails at KES 600, and the labour charges of KES 12000. This was purposefully for the construction of a new better house because the initial one was grass-thatched moreover very small. I had to seek shelter during the rainy days because of the condition of my house. Additionally, I bought two goats worthy of KES 7000 which will serve as my living assets. With the remaining cash, I have been buying food and decent clothing for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I want to start a saloon business. It is my passion and I want to start my own boutique. Receiving this money will make it possible for me to achieve this ambition. I will spend around KES 70,000 to buy all the saloon equipment and after paying rent I hope to be able to earn a good profit that will be able to sustain my three household members. That income will also enable me to improve my house and pay school fees for my child who is going to join primary school soon.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For sure life has been tough for my family. The coming of GiveDirectly to our area has brought me happiness since I know it allows me to reach my goal of starting my hairdressing business which has been my passion for long.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband has had to depend on temporary work in order to sustain us. The money we get we need to spend on food for survival. In a week, my husband makes KES 2000 which is not sustainable for a family of 3 members. This lack of regular income is our main challenge we are currently facing. .
