How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No not really. I have always dreamed about fixing my old house and that goal still stands today. It has been my primary goal. I am so happy to be a recipient of this GiveDirectly cash transfer program. I lost my husband few years ago and the responsibilities of taking care of our kids and their well been rest squarely on me. The condition of the house we are are currently living in is so terrible. My house leaks and this leakages cause me and my kids to suffer from cold. My biggest dream is to change the roof of my house and plaster the walls of my house. I have paid for the Zinc and Cement from my first and second transfers. I have also cash out my third transfer but want to us it to pay the workers who are going to fix my house. My kids wellbeing is my concern. Now I feel so satisfy that my goal of improving my house is becoming a reality. The workers are currently working on other houses here in the town. They have assured me that when they are done with the others, they are going to come and complete my house. This achievement brings me great joy.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion the enrollment processes are transparent. There are no biases. The staffs are also kind Everytime they visit us. There is no preferential treatment in the village from the staff. But the most important one is that GiveDirectly send us unconditional cash and allow us to spend the money how ever we want to better our lives. This guesture brings me the greatest joy. This is not normal of any NGO. I have seen other NGOs visit this county but their scope of operations has been nothing far from the traditional NGO. GiveDirectly is different! They are responsible for my life improvement and that my kids can today have a better living condition soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received my third transfer and collected it. Since I collected my third transfer, I haven't spent anything from it. My brother, where I am now, I feel over excited. This is the biggest difference in my life. See the condition of my house. My kids suffer from cold most times due to the leakages from the old roof. Since my husband died, I have not had any help from anyone. I had no hope of getting this kind of money to change my life this way. I can't believe I am going to have an improve house soon. It is a dream come true for me to today be financially empower by GiveDirectly to decide on how best to change my own life. I still have the third transfer here with me. I bought some Zinc and Cement with my first and second transfers. I am now only waiting for the engineers to finish the neighbors work and come to mine. They are still busy on other neighbors project so I have to wait till they are done. After that, mine can start.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a moment of unspeakable Joy for me. This is a life changing opportunity for my family. I was right here in this town when others started jubilating because they saw GiveDirectly cash transfer alert. After waiting patiently for my first transfer as mentioned by the GiveDirectly staff, I hurry to check my messages also. Surely! I saw the Cash transfer message. I lost my husband few years ago. 2017 to be exact. He was everything to this family. However, I took on all the responsibilities after his death. I have 7 children but amongst them, I have a daughter who is in the 12th grade. My daughter got her promotion to the 12th grade last school year. That was exciting but I was also worried on how I would pay her fees the next school year. I struggle to take care of my children as a single mother. I couldn't improve my house because all of what I could get went towards my kids school and feeding. With this cash transfer program, I can honestly say that I have some hope. I am sure that I am going to improve my family. My daughter school fees has also been paid and am working on the rest of my goals.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a single mother it has been difficult to take care of my 7 children. Their feeding and well-being has been so difficult from a single mother perspective. I felt so stressed out. I could hardly eat and be happy. I struggled! But, the biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving transfer from GiveDirectly has been the relief of stress. I was able to pay my children school fees and buy some sheet of Zinc to change the roof of my house. Am amazed at this good guesture from GiveDirectly. This is a moment that I will never forget. These differences in my daily life has been something amazing and I am going to capitalize on this for the future of my kids.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I really do miss my dead husband. I now understand what men go through. I have to be strong and take care of my kids. With the first transfer that I received, I was able to pay my children, especiallly the School fees of my daughter who is in the 12th grade. I feel excited because she has done very well and brought proud to me and her late father. I bought the others kids their Uniform. Moreover, I bought two bundles of Zinc to improve my house. The roof of my house is currently a Tatch. It has been so deplorable to the extent we have to place dishes all over in all the rooms when it rains. It has been a goal for as well. The leakages to the roof of my house has been seriously bad. I am so excited to be empower and that the decision to change my life rest with me.
