How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have one additional goal of buying another dairy cow if not two. Dairy farming is a thing that people do rely on here to earn a living and having bought one with the first transfer, I look forward to buying yet another one to increase my income base. I was also able to buy chain link and other needs but purchasing another dairy cow will enable me make more income for my family and give the best education to my two children by affording to pay their school fees. I intend to use proceeds from my horticultural farming to make this a reality in the next few months or so.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The fact that every household in our village was enrolled without any form of discrimination is something that I thought was excellent. We were also given an opportunity to choose for ourselves what to spend the money on and this was something to appreciate GiveDirectly for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 15000 to buy goats for keeping and used another KES 10000 to improve my horticultural farming. The goats are an investment that I thought will help me in times of emergencies to meet the needs that were unforeseen and the horticultural farming shall as well enable us as a family to realize more goals like that of buying additional livestock and bettering our living standards. We look forward top achieving this.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While working on the farm at about 9.30 a.m. Out of curiosity, I decided to check my phone and that's when I saw that I had received KES 55,000. I couldn't hide my joy when it occurred to me that I finally had the money to buy a dairy cow for my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before receiving this cash transfer, my family had to buy milk every morning, at KES 35 a litre. This is costly for us because we have no source of income. This situation has caused us a lot of distress in the past. But I'm glad to note that things have changed. We bought a dairy cow that has been supplying our family of four with enough milk. We can save the money we would spend on the same to meet other needs. Thanks, GD!
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk every morning at KES 35 a litre is costly for our family because we have no source of income. So I was pleased to spend KES 35,000 on the purchase of a dairy cow that can supply all four of us with milk. I then spent KES 13,000 on barbed wire and cement for the construction of a chicken coup, as I wish to start poultry farming soon.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I love dairy farming. I have one cow and I would like to have 2 more. A good dairy cow is sold at KES 50000. In preparation for that, I have planted Napier grass for them. So when I get this money I will use it to buy them. The milk I will get from these cows will be a good source of income. A liter of milk is sold at KES 40. Crop farming is no longer doing well due to diseases and low rainfall so dairy farming is the better option.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had planted cabbages in a small piece of land and I made a lot of profit. I had spent KES 1700 to purchase seed, phosphate, and pest control drugs. The profit was KES 7000. That money I made I bought 2 sags of maize to feed my family and another packet of seedlings hoping to plant and earn profit.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge we are currently facing is insufficient food. We used to depend on crop farming but due to diseases and low rainfall crops wither. I am a casual laborer daily earnings per day is KES 100 and with this little money, I have to decide on buying food and other household needs. My earnings are very little to meet all the needs of my family.
