How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have practiced livestock keeping as a casual laborer in my neighbor's farm for long. I am happy that this gave me knowledge of livestock farming as well as earning a living. I built the desire of starting livestock farming but could due to limited resources. When I received my first transfer, I purchased two cows and six goats through cash transfer. I am glad that my desires have been met since I have added animals to my cowshed. Had it not been for the financial help from GiveDirectly, then it would have taken many years to acquire them. I will be selling them in case of a financial emergency as well as raising more money to finance my children's education through milk sales.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly came to help the needy and they have done it well. We have been able to provide for our families effectively, purchasing livestock as assets and most importantly, building better iron-roofed houses thus enjoying good shelter. GiveDirectly was firm and fair on their operation, inclusive and could listen to each person. Thank you GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had been lucky to have to build a new decent house for my family, a dream that I had for long. When I received my second transfer, I used KES28000 to complete the few incomplete areas I had left. I used it on the ceiling, tables and chairs. I feel so good to have a decent house fully furnished courtesy of GiveDirecly. In addition, I took KES10000 to spent our clothing. We are happy as a family to have smart new clothes to add to the few old we had. I spent some amount on farming to fence my farm, build a chicken coop and to buy some chickens. I am happy to have invested this amount on farming expecting better returns from.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life brought about by this money is that we now have a new house as a family. For a long time I had been thinking of building a new house but since we entirely depend on casual labour we have not been able to save enough money to be able to accomplish these plans. The little amount of money that my husband and I get is usually just enough to buy food for the family and when we received this sum of money from GiveDirectly, we were so happy that finally we were going to accomplish some of the plans that we had always thought of.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a notification message from Safaricom at around 4:00 am. I felt so happy and later went back to sleep. I confirmed early in the morning that day that I had indeed received the money from GiveDirectly. I then got down to planning on how to use the money and we agreed on all the plans that we were to accomplish.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used part of my transfer to build a new house and used part of the remaining amount to buy a dairy cow. I was also able to use part of it to buy food and clothes for my family. The decision to build a new house was informed by the fact that the old house was grass thatched and had a leaking roof. We now live comfortably in the new house and we are so grateful to GiveDirectly. I also decided to buy a dairy cow since the one that we were relying on as a family belonged to someone else. For a long time we have always desired to have one of our own but since we depend on casual labour to raise money for family needs and expenditures, we have not been able to save up enough money to enable us accomplish some of these plans. We now have a dairy cow that has boosted milk production in the family and enabled us have better living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me do more of dairy farming.I will buy one dairy cow to add to the one I have.I will also pay school fees for my children. My child will be joining secondary school next year and I ought to be ready for it.I need to have saved enough by the end of the year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first duty in the morning after my children go to school is milking the cows. After that I embark on farm work. This involves either working on my own farm or working on other people's farms inorder to get money.I come back late in the afternoon to do house chores and look after cattle. The happiest of my day is in the evening because it is usually my time to relax after the day's activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is having a stable source of income. For the thirteen years of my marriage it hasn't been easy.My husband and I are casual labourers. One is never guaranteed of getting a job.At some point we even lacked food.We used to live in a small grass thatched house which leaked until recently that we managed to build a better one.We are now struggling with school fees.More needs keep arising as the children grow up.I have four children and this has not been an easy ride.
