How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I would like to have a spacious house for my family of five since the current one is small in size. As my family grows, there is a need for sufficient space as well as privacy. Additionally, in case I have a visitor, I will not have to worry. I will also earn some respect from society at large.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by helping the neediest households across the whole region. This has transformed me greatly because there are certain assets that I couldn't have purchased if it weren't for the support. I also had full control over the cash, so I chose what worked best for me. Therefore, even in the next village, I wish they could do the same as they did to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on purchasing a piece of land for $250. I settled for it purposefully for my farming activities since this is what I depend on for my livelihood. Back in the day, I used to lease from my neighbours, which was very costly to me. Most of the time, I couldn't afford it, which could mean I could harvest very low farm products, hence a prolonged famine. I now feel great that the issue of food security is resolved. To add to that, I gave my spouse $100 to settle my dowry since my parents have been frustrating him for so long. I never had peace in my marriage because of the unending threats. We are currently glad as a couple since this has earned us more respect. To add to that, I bought uniforms, stationery, and paid fees for my two school-going children. Seeing them back in class means a lot to me, considering that they have been on and off from school. Also, they will have ample time to prepare for their final examinations. I later spent a portion of the cash to seek better medication for my mother-in-law, who has been ailing at home. With the remaining cash, I settled a debt and purchased food for my family. At least we can now afford to take two meals a day, which was not possible before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 4 p.m., I received a message that, while it did not identify the source as GiveDirectly, I couldn't help but notice after looking at the amount of money indicated on the receipt notification. My husband was at work, so I had to wait until he got home in the evening to tell him the exciting news. He was overjoyed and grateful that our plans were finally coming to fruition. The following day, we collected the entire sum and began spending it on the items listed.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most noticeable difference in my daily life is the comfort of sleeping on a comfortable mattress in a bed that I purchased with money from my first transfer. I am currently sleeping well and waking up less with back pain caused by the hard floor and light rags I was sleeping on. I am grateful to GiveDirectly and hope that the subsequent transfer will continue to transform my entire family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $125 on new bedding and a new bed after receiving the first transfer. For a long time, I had been sleeping on old rags on the floor, which had caused severe back pain. I was concerned about the potential health consequences, but now I am grateful that GiveDirectly has changed my story. I also spent $40 on expanding and bringing in more birds to increase egg production and thus generate additional income. I also spent $65 on new clothing and shoes for my family of five, $5 on a new storage bag that I am currently using to store my clean clothes, $5 on new utensils, and $20 on school fees for my three children. In addition, for $78, I purchased a solar lighting system that included a battery and three bulbs and spent the remainder on food items such as rice, sugar, baking flour, wheat flour, and other items used during Christmas celebrations.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of five members and we are living on a 0.2 acres piece of land. The land is small such that I cannot do farming. Every season I lease land for $ 20. I will use $900 to buy 2 acres piece of land. This is spacious such that my children will build their houses when they grow up and also I will be free to do my farming there. I will also use $ 100 to pay school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Two weeks ago, my husband got a job where he earned $ 20. This has never happened to him before. I used $ 5 to pay school fees and also used $ 5 to clear debts at a nearby shop where I had taken two packets of maize flour on credit before. I was very happy that day because my children continued with their studies without disruption and I also used the remaining $ 10 to buy 4 packets of maize flour for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband Ndoro works as a casual worker. He earns approximately $ 10 per work. I am a housewife who depends on agriculture and it has been three years now without rain in the village. I have two children who are schooling at Sosodem Primary and each pays $ 50 per year. The income received by my husband caters only to food. So the children have been on and off of school due to the fees arrears. Lack of a reliable source of income for the family is the current challenge I am facing.
