What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 1000 to reduce the school fee arrears of my three children to KES 1000. We have been struggling to be timely on the fee payment but my husband's earnings as a tout and mine as a farmer a very inconsistent. Even food provision has been a challenge. For this, I also used KES 1000 to stock up the house with some nourishments. The remaining KES 1,000 I saved in a merry-go-round with the intent to raise capital for the mobile second-hand clothe-selling business I plan on starting. To buy a bale, I will need to raise KES 40000. I have managed to save KES 10,000, hopefully, soon I will get to my targeted amount to start working on my project that will help boost our finances.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly has done very well with the monthly cash donations and I do not see any areas of improvement. I am very grateful for their great work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I a maize farmer, before the droughts, I would harvest one and a half bags of maize. But now, due to the droughts, I only harvest 2 buckets. This hasn't been quite profitable for me and I have been behind with my bills. When I got my transfers, I used ksh1500 to save in the Chama, ksh1500on food, ksh1500 on school fees and the remaining ksh1500 on my hospital bill. This as greatly improved my finances.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was around 9 am when I was at home washing utensils. I heard a loud message notification on the phone. I was eager to know the content of the message. I was well aware that these were the dates that GiveDirectly would send us the transfer. I was thrilled after discovering that I had received the transfer. I quickly called my husband and told him the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most significant difference in my life currently is that my children are back in school. I previously could not manage to pay school fees for them. This has made it difficult for them, too, since they were constantly being sent back home. I am happy now that they are back in school and continue with their learning.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I rely on casual jobs for my day-to-day survival. The earnings from these jobs are minimal to be able to attend to all my family needs. For a long time, I have been struggling to pay school fees for my children. When I received the transfer, I spent half of it on paying school fees for my children. In addition to that, I spent KSH 1000 on paying for medication. A few days before receiving the transfer, I felt ill. My health situation quickly deteriorated, and I had to seek proper remedy in a private hospital. I saved the remaining KSH 500 to start a business once I received the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My lifelong dream has been to start a second-hand clothes business but financial inability has been the major challenge since I couldn't raise enough capital on my own or borrow a loan. Receiving this money means that I will be able to secure 3000 KES loan to start the business whereby I will be servicing it with monthly transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel very happy whenever I afford to provide basic needs for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My father died when I was young and because we were many siblings, my mother could not educate all of us. I never went to school due to school fees and I believe if I had a chance to go to school, life would never be the same.
