How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to build a decent and spacious poultry house. I started a poultry project sometime back and I do not have a good structure. This poultry project earns me daily income through the sales of eggs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in that it does the training prior to giving out the transfer. The registration was done well without any discrimination. and most of the people spent their transfer well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a dairy-keeping project, This has earned me some income from the sales of milk. I have always wished to expand it by purchasing more dairy cows but this was not possible because I did not have enough money then. I rely on small scale farming whereby I plant maize and beans but this is majorly for consumption. When I received the second transfer I spent $350 on purchasing a dairy cow. This added me the number of liters of milk that I always sell every day. This means I get some additional income to meet my daily household basic needs. I am so happy because were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite a dome time to achieve. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items that we were missing at that time. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard to be much better.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was around 7:00 pm when I got to know that we had been sent the money by GiveDirectly. I was with one of my sons and my husband and shared the good news with them and they were equally very happy to hear this. The money came at a time when my husband was planning to go to hospital for his routine checkup following an ailment that has stayed with him for quite a while now. The following day they were able to go to hospital without any difficulties since we had the money for fueling and other logistics. This was like a miracle to us as a family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I am now very happy mother. For the longest time my husband has been ill and we have accumulated huge hospital bills of up to KES 600000. Getting a support of KES 50000 from GiveDirectly was a huge boost to me. At a time that I have borrowed money from different quotas just to meet the needs of my husband in hospital is just overwhelming. The entire family's needs have lied squarely in me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 20000 to pay school fees for my child and used another KES 14000 to buy a heifer. KES 10000 was used to take my husband to hospital for his regular check up wile the remaining amount of KES 10000 was used to buy basic household needs such as food and clothes for us. I chose to buy a heifer so that it will always remind me of the support that I got from GiveDirectly and for the sole reason that we rely on livestock keeping as a form of livelihood in our area. We had concentrated so much on meeting hospital needs for my ailing husband and one of my children who had successfully studies at a local college was unable to clear school fees and get his certificate but I am now happy that she has her certificate with her and will be in a position to seek employment henceforth. My family feels so much indebted to GiveDirectly for the timely support that we got from them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money will help us settle medical bills of my husband. He has been paralyse for one year and he is under regular medication. Medical bills rise upto KES 100,000 in every three months. This money will help us with basic needs and clear some of this medical bills. We are growing old and we don't have regular income apart from help from our children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband went through an operation last week and we were so scared. But we thank God that he came out well and now improving health wise. That was a great source of joy to us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Taking care of my paralysed husband is a big task that does not allow me do other activities. I'm a staunt christian and sometimes I need time to go do some preaching but the situation at home requires my presence always.
