How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to start a poultry-keeping project. This will earn me some income through the sales of eggs. When I get my share from the group where I do monthly saving I will start this project immediately.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in that enrollment was rarely done and most of the people who received the transfer spent it well. Since the money was unconditional most of the people invested in different income generating project and this has improved their standard of living. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I buy milk daily from my neighbors and this is so costly for me since I do not have a steady source of income. I depend on casual jobs in the village to earn some money to meet the daily needs of my family. I spent $280 on purchasing a heifer. I am so grateful because I have always wished to own a cow. When it gives birth in the new few months I will get enough milk for my family and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I spent $ 3 per week on buying milk. My children would get enough milk, Besides that, I will sell the surplus milk to earn some money to meet additional basic needs. I paid $100 for the dowry. I have a few balances yet to clear soon. I am so happy because I had promised my inlaws to pay them on time, This brought respect and understanding between us and our inlaws. I saved $70 in merry go round group that we started in our village. When I get my savings I will invest in a poutry-keeping project. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other basic household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was heading home from my workplace. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I confirmed that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with happiness. The news was rejuvenating after a long day of hard work in the field under the sun. Upon reaching home I broke the news to my equally happy wife. We then embarked on planning on how best we would utilise our funds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I was able to pay the dowry for my wife. I am relieved and happy because that went down smoothly. Owning two cows is also a blessing that I would forever cherish. It would be a reminder of the unconditional transfer that transformed our lives in years to come. I am forever grateful for the support that lifted our living standards amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a casual labourer within and outside the village, I am married and blessed with one child. Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I saw it fit to purchase a dairy cow to add to the one that I had before to increase the milk production. Therefore I used KES20,000 in realising the goal. I then used KES 12,000 on buying iron sheets in preparation for building a new house once I receive my second transfer. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on paying the dowry. I was unable to accomplish all this due to financial constraints. I am forever grateful for the support that uplifted my life.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do not have a stable source of income hence have the desire to start up a poultry farming business. I do casual jobs to meet the basic needs of my family of 3. Unreliable and inconsistent jobs make it difficult to save for the future. Receiving this money means I will be able to buy 150 chickens, build a structure and purchase a wire mesh for fencing. This will earn me enough money from the sale of eggs a boost my income. I am happy because this transfer will see my dreams come through.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In March my brother gave me a dairy cow. I was struggling so much to get milk for my 3-month-old son. This was a relief to my family since it solved the problem I was facing.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is financial constraints. This is because I depend on casual jobs to raise an income. I earn KES 200 a day which is enough to meet my family's basic needs such as food and school levies for my child. Considering it's unstable, it makes it difficult to plan and improve my living standards.
