How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The goals that I had for this second transfer were a water reservoir tank and building a bigger house, especially for my children because we had been going through a lot hardships competing for space in our small house. I had these goals because I had spent the first transfer on settling my children's school fees arrears, buying food for my family and other essentials. I was so grateful when I got the money, because it was the assistance I needed to address those challenges I had been facing, as I didn't know how I was going to do as I am a widow with no actual job to rely on.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am personally so happy and grateful for I got the assistance and help I needed to address the challenges I was facing. I was able to settle my children's school fees arrears and I am currently in the process of building a bigger house for their sake so that they can live and study comfortably. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly, and I don't see anything that it didn't or doesn't do well. Everything to me was done so well, and so many of us were helped.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 40000 on buying the materials I need to build a bigger house for my children because we have been living in a rather small house and been competing for the little space. It had been so difficult to address this challenge as my husband is deceased and I have no one to give me a hand. This house, therefore, is a very huge relief to me because it has space which there won't be congestion and we will be living comfortably without having to compete for the little space like in the one we have been living in. I am so grateful especially for my children because they also will not have to be worried about where to sleep as they will have their own room, unlike before when they had to be hosted by neighbors and friends.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was around 9 am, I was busy in school preparing porridge for the PP1 pupils. I was appointed by the parents to cook for the pupils. My phone was charging at that time, I had sent my son to my house to pick it. When I switch it on I saw a message from the service provider indicating that I had received my transfer. I was very happy for receiving my transfer that mark the turning point to a better life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am living a comfortable life free from stress after clearing the school fee arrears for the kids that use to bother me a lot. Furthermore, I am spending nights on comfortable bedding after acquiring new, modern proper beddings for my family. I thank GiveDirectly for the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 38,000 to support my 5 children's education since they had huge fee arrears. My elder son had completed secondary school but he failed to obtain his results due to the huge fee arrears of KES 30,000. After receiving the transfer, I paid the fee balance for the elder son and pay KES 8000 for my 4 other children who are still in primary schools. I also purchase a bed and mattress for KES 10,800 this is because I was using a traditional bed that had broken legs and it was not comfortable to use. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a better shelter for my family. This because I am sharing a one bedroom house with my dive children; three boys and two girls.I am planning to build a two bedroom house for my family, a house that will cost me 400 dollars. I will use the balance to furnish my house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I have a chat with my children in the evening at the same time sing gospel songs.Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when both of us are not at home.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced is food insecurity. Iam a widow and I rely on casual job that pays me little income which cannot sustain me with my family.Sometimes when I seek help from neighbors they talk negative about me.This embarrasses me.
