How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the near future and beyond. I am planning to hire a piece of land for farming as I own a smaller one. I will as well hire a tractor for farming instead of doing it with the help of casual labourers. This is cost-effective as compared to when it is done by the labourers. In addition, I have plans of starting up a groceries business to be run in the evenings. Groceries business has high demand as food is consumed on a daily basis. The profits earned will be enough for my young family's basic needs like food, clothing and school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to my opinion, what Give Directly does so well is that they give out unconditional transfers, different people have different needs, and we have the freedom how to spend the transfers so long as it is something that does not harm us together with community members. The transfers are given in lump sum amounts and this helps in planning purposes in terms of the developments that we would wish to engage in at a personal level. Unlike other projects where it is given in small amounts. To avoid household conflict, what needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents. Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a parent of three boys who are still in Primary school, they are in classes two, four and five. Before the GiveDirectly transfers, I never had any stable source of income and providing for my family had been the most difficult task I have ever faced. I used part of the transfers of kshs 30,000 to build an extension to my house as the one I had was small in size and could not accommodate our farm produce. Before the transfers, thieves could take advantage of this and most of the farm produce was stolen during the night as I could hide them behind our main house. I used the rest of the transfers of kshs 20,000 to buy more stock for my business of second-hand clothes. While the rest of the transfers of kshs 3,150 catered for basic needs like food and clothing. I thank GiveDirectly for the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 Am when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. My family members felt so happy too because they knew I would be able to plan well. It was one of the happiest mornings I have ever had in my life. I knew I would be able to own land and build my own house and live peacefully with my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is purchasing a piece of land. I spend KES 30,000 and the balance of KES 10,000 was to be paid when I received the second transfer. Currently, I live with my parent at home. I had always wished to own a piece of land but it was not possible because I did not have the money. I depend on small-scale farming and small business selling maize in town. The amount of money that I would get through this is so small. I was only able to meet the daily basis needs and pay school fees for my children. I had no extra money to save so that I could buy land. This was so demoralizing because living with parents in one place sometimes bring some misunderstanding and disagreements. I wanted my privacy and space. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and grateful. Currently, I have a piece of land and I have purchased some of the materials ready to start the construction process. I am so happy because I will be able to live a better life and have my privacy. My children are so happy and grateful for the support. GiveDirectly has improved our living standards and enabled us to achieve our dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 30,000 on purchasing a piece of land. This has always been my dream. I heeded a place where I could build my own house and live peacefully with my children. Currently, I have hope that when I received the second transfer I will be able to build a house and relocate. I spend KES 22,330 on purchasing 24 iron sheets in preparation to build a house. For the rest of the money, I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After the demise of my husband, my relationship with my brothers in law deteriorated, and I was then kicked out of that family. This left me homeless, landless and opened me to poverty. This was my sad moment as I was left with nothing to depend on. With this money, I will plan KES 40000 to buy 0.1 acres piece of land and then build a better house I.e a two-roomed house for my family. I am currently running a small business of buying and selling maize in Chebunyo center. This kept me going and able to provide for my children. I will inject the remaining money into this business to enable me to tap more profit. This will help reduce the burden of putting food on the table for my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been enjoying peace of mind with my children since I was kicked out by my brothers in-law. This make me happy and have more energy to work and provide for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge for me is inadequate and unstable income for my family. This is a threat to my business of buying and selling maize grain. As a result of this, I end up using capital or stock to feed my family.
