How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I could not have received money from give directly my spouse could not have managed to pay dowry to his in laws and I am sure my parent could still be pressurising him. I could also not have managed to hire people to weed for my farm since I do not have any stable income, I could have used my hand to weed it although it is very hectic and tiresome. I am happy I have managed to buy cow as my future investment I will not spend money a gain buying milk from the community.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion Give directly did very well by using M-pesa as away of sending money since it is very convenient because the M-pesa agent is almost every where and also very safe because it is not easy for one to know if you have received the money. They also did very well by not involving authority since it could attracted corruption.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money to support my spouse paying dowry to his in laws. I thought of supporting him because my parents were pressurising him to pay dowry but he could not afford because he does not have any stable source of income. Since he paid the dowry he is at peace and he also earn more respect from his in laws, we are also now staying very peacefully since there is no more pressure from my parents. I also spent the transfer on farming where by I spent the money to hire people to weed my farm since the farm was too big I can not weed it alone. I feel l should invest in farming because I do not have any other source of income a part from farming and that is where I get my daily bread. I am sure when we have enough rain I will be able to get enough yield that will sustain me for so long without spending money to buy maize. The remaining balance I spent to buy cow as my future investment, I will be getting milk from it for my consumption and also sell some to the near by market and save the money for my children. Since my children are still very young, they are in primary school and very soon they will be joining secondary school and this will help me pay their fee with ease.
