What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband who works as a handyman at a construction site has not been getting work for almost two months now. This has made it hard for us to purchase some food for my three children, two of whom are in school and one is still too young to join. Whenever he would be contracted, he would make KES 300 daily. On days like this when he is not working, we would be forced to buy food on credit and once he gets the funds, he would settle it. When I got these funds, I had a debt of KES 1500 at the shop. I, therefore, cleared it and used the remaining amount to purchase more food for us.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly has done very well in supporting the people like myself through the monthly cash transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a shopkeeper. My shop only has a few products like sugar, flour soap, and candies. The business has been on the verge of collapse as a result of low sales during this coronavirus time. Before, I would make ksh500 daily, but now, I could go a day without any profit made. So, when I got my first transfer of ksh1200, I used it all to clear my children's school fee arrears and my second transfer of ksh3000, was all invested in my shop. I restocked it and now I can say it has started picking up.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the text message at 10 am. A friend of mine who was passing by delivered the good news that she had received her transfer. I was very eager after hearing that and I went ahead and picked my phone from the charging shop. Upon checking my phone I realized that I had indeed received the transfer too. I was happy and tears of joy flowed through my cheeks.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has brought a big difference in my life and that of my children. I had been experiencing moments of being stressed. I was every time thinking hard about where I was going to get money to pay school fees for my children. They had been severally been sent home on several occasions to go home and pick school fees. I am very happy now that they are back in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have grown up knowing that education is the key to success and a better life. I was not able to continue with my education when I was young due to cultural reasons. My father believed back then that the girl child was not supposed to get educated. The results of not getting educated are now catching up with me. I have no job, I have a family who looks up to me for everything. It is very sad when you are not able to provide fully for your kids especially when it comes to matters of education. When I received the transfer I used it all in paying school fees for my children. I want to change what I went through back then by being able to support my children in their education so that they can have a better future ahead.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have an existing retail shop. It is not as stocked as I would want it to be. My husband is a great provider. As he works hard to buy food and educate our children, I will use this money from Give Directly to add more stock to the shop. From the proceeds, I will save the most I can so that we construct a better house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We got an addition to the family. My third-born child was born. Since I was a teenager, my heart desire was to bear three children. When the third one finally came, I could not stop thanking God for granting me this wish.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
There has been a water shortage for over three months now. Together with other women, we are forced to walk long distances every day in search. This exercise has started to take a toll on my health. I recently gave birth. That combined with walking far distances has my back hurting very badly.
