Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was already stressed with the passing on of my husband shortly before we received the transfers and the fact that we had used every resource to make sure that we safe his life. I could not get my mind to forget the ordeal and GiveDirectly came in handy to help me pull myself together by reimbursing part of what I had lost. I feel so much relieved to date and very grateful for that.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now living a more stress free life than I had before receiving the money. I felt lonely when I lost my husband and what made me even more lonely is the fact that we had used every resource that we had to try and safe his life. GiveDirectly came in handy to help me out by giving me the transfers. I now feel so much happy
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to buy a cow and used another KES 18000 to buy a water tank. The remaining amount of slightly over KES 10000 was used to clear some debts owed to us as a family. We had used a lot of money in hospital trying to save my husband's life only for him to succumb to illness and we had sold all the livestock including a piece of land that we owned. The water tank investment was informed by the fact that for a long time I had had to travel for far long distances in search of water and often ended up using water that was not safe for consumption. I am happy that I now have access to clean drinking water courtesy of GiveDirectly

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a stable old age for me. At the moment I have to struggle so much to find food, water and at night my house is too cold. I am not happy at all that I have grown old, I wish I were still young with energy so that I can fend for myself. I would like to use these transfers to buy a water tank because I have no more energy to carry water from the river. I will also buy windows for my house so that I will not have cold nights again. The rest I will use to plant some maize in my farm and it will help me to have more food next year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was so happy that after the funeral of my husband all my relatives did a fundraiser for me to help me pay the hospital bill that my husband left behind. I managed to clear the bill without so much stress.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenges I currently have include this cold house, during the rainy season I cough a lot, and my health is affected so much. I also lost my husband of 35 years 3 months ago and it has been so hard coping with life without him, he used to provide for me everything but when he passed on I had to learn how to survive by myself.
