How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Receiving this money means my dream project of rearing over 500 poultry attained crucial progress. Having a house structure suggests that I am ready to keep the birds. Also, I can make some good savings from my salaried job because we have sufficient food that can sustain us for some months to come. I have managed to build a shop from savings - another business project. Finally, my family members are happy since they have new clothes and look smarter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by enlightening recipients before sending the transfers. This helps ensure maximum use of the funds. The organization should however increase spot checks through field follow-ups to witness how recipients spend their transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 400 USD of my second transfer on building a poultry structure in readiness to implementing my dream project of rearing over 500 birds. Also, we bought foodstuffs worth 90 USD because we had depleted our stock. Finally, we purchased clothes with the remaining amount to ensure my family members feel happy and look more decent. Most of my family members, especially children tend to be more satisfied when they get new clothing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy when I received the SMS saying that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I immediately informed my wife who was too excited to hear about this. We thanked God and GiveDirectly because we saw our plans and dreams coming to life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer from GiveDirectly is going to change our lives for the better. The dream of expanding our poultry farming business from 70 birds to 500 birds is now going to manifest itself since we are currently constructing a bigger poultry house that will be enough to accommodate them. We are also planning to smear the house with mud so that the chicks can have a warmer house and hence they will not be dying of cold. This poultry farming business will enable us to get the money that we can use to cater to the needs of the family such as buying food and paying for the children’s school fees. This poultry farming will too act as a stepping stone for dairy farming as we plan to use some of the proceeds from poultry farming to start dairy farming. With the food that we bought with part of the transfer, we will be having something to eat for quite some time and hence we will not be having worries about the shortage of food. May God bless GiveDirectly for coming up with this noble idea of helping the needy during these hard times.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The money from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I bought food for my family that I believe will last them for a while. I bought two bags of maize, thirty tins of beans, ten kilograms of rice, and twenty-five kilograms of sugar. The money also enabled us to achieve our dream of expanding our poultry farming business. We have bought treated fencing poles, iron sheets, and frames that we are using in building a bigger poultry house that will accommodate more than five hundred poultry chickens. We also managed to buy a few clothes for ourselves and that for our children. We had other plans such as starting a dairy farm but we decided to settle on expanding our poultry farming business because it is easy to manage and it is affordable. My wife too has a lot of time to take care of them since she lost her job of teaching in a private school when Coronavirus started in our country. We wanted a bigger and warmer house for our poultry especially the chicks but we were not in a position to construct it before because of a lack of enough money to do so. So when the lump sum transfer came in, we decided to embark on the plan of expanding it. Thank you GiveDirectly for making this possible.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a lot to me. I am passionate about poultry farming but due to lack of proper housing for my chicken, they keep on dying due to cold. I will therefore use $200 of my funds to build a modern poultry unit, then buy 200 chicken at a total cost of $600. I will use the remaining $160 to buy an egg incubator. This will ensure constant chicks multiplication, an assurance of constant income from selling chicken meat and eggs
What is the happiest part of your day?
Waking up each day in good health is always a motivating factor for me. It is during this time that I set my goals for the day and how to go about them, thus morning is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a sustainable source of income is the biggest hardship I face. I practice farming in my 2-acre piece of land, where I get low yields due to low land productivity resulting from prolonged drought in this region. I have tried engaging in poultry keeping as an alternative source of income but due to poor housing, the chicken keeps on dying due to cold. My priority upon receiving Give Directly grants therefore, is to build a better poultry unit.
