How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Suppose I get additional money, I would like to buy additional land specifically for dairy farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to change living standards. For example, through the transfers, I now have adequate food and clothing for my family. This I could not afford before and would rely on well-wishers at times.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been suffering from a big sore on my left leg for the past 28 years. As a result, I cannot walk for long distances and can not do heavy because it is painful.
Therefore, I decided to venture into dairy farming to fend for my family. So when I received my second transfer, I spent KES 30,000 on the purchase of a second dairy cow. This means increased milk production hence more income. Secondly, due to my health condition dairy farming doesn't require much attention compared to crop farming.
Additionally, I spent KES 3300 on a bag of maize and KES 2500 on 20 kilos of beans. This has helped feed my family for the past month and will still sustain us for the next month.
Furthermore, KES 5000 was used on purchasing a goat. This will act as an alternative milk source when my dairy cows are in their dry spells.
Lastly, I spent KES 10,000 on the latest clothing fashion. This has made my family dress more decently compared to before when we could only afford second-hand clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at about 11.a.m and was just home doing my house chores when I received a message from Givedirectly.When I checked, it was an MPESA message confirming a receipt of Kshs.55,000 .I was very excited and thankful to God since I knew all the plans I had would me initiated.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is achieving all the plans that I had written down before receiving the cash transfer. I am happy and grateful to Give directly for the support.

Upon receipt of the first transfer, I was super excited to initiate the plans I had. With the first transfer, I spent Kshs.20,000 in paying school fees arrears for my two kids in secondary school. I was relieved since I knew my children were going to have ample time in studying without disturbances. I also spent Kshs.25,000 in buying a heifer which is an addition to my livestock. This will produce more milk in the future and I will sell it so that it can cater to household bills. With the remaining amount, I spent on purchasing food and clothes for all my family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This help could not have come at a time like this. I feel that the universe has conspired for me. I am so elated, I am indisposed and can hardly engage in any meaningful economic activity. As you can see my leg has swollen, I was diagnosed with cancer of the leg since 1994. My husband passed away sometimes last year and with the situation I am in now , it is very difficult to provide for my family. I have always dreamt of having a dairy cow with the aim of selling milk to get disposable income. With this help from give direct I am so certain I will be able to own one and help my family since I cannot go to the shamba. I intend to buy a dairy cow worth KES 40000 and for the rest of the mone,y I will use it for medication.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Due to my condition, I simply stay at home most of the time. I struggled to do household chores and then take a rest. My happiest part of the day is in the morning. Waking up to a new day gives me joy and happiness. I do not take it for granted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Honestly, I am faced with a myriad of challenges, notable is the lack of disposable income. I am a widow, I have cancer and little means to see my 2 girls get through school leave alone money for medication or even food. Life has bitten me so hard. I sometimes see no sense of living , life has lost meaning to me. Each day is hell for me. I have no energy to work, I thank God that Gives Directly has come to my rescue, at least I will be able to purchase a dairy cow.
