What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was married about half a year ago not yet blessed with a child. My husband works in Mombasa as hotel steward, a job that earns him only 18000 KES. Personally I run a kiosk offering general shop products right here in the village. This business is somehow slow but growing. I'm grateful I still do not have much burden to worry about but I strongly feel it's that time that I need to start saving for our future together. The best way to do this I believe is by starting livestock farming which I can use to both save and invest my money. In this the value of my money appreciates and I'm able to resell any time of need.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was very happy when we got the news that our village has been chosen to participate in a GiveDirectly's cash transfer program. I have always heard about this organization from other villages that had already benefitted and I liked it. I must confirm that I'm still hopeful we will make it through enrollment processes and benefit as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In this area it's really hard to get water as there has been a serious draught for almost two years now. This has also affected availability of food mostly because we have not been able to conduct subsistence farming like we used to. To be able to get some types of food like vegetables, one has to go all the way to the nearest town , around thirty kilometers away. On water issue, we also get supply just twice a week and because it's popped water it has a price tag other than the fact be that it's fetched five kilometers away from home.
