How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new objective: I want to buy some goats to keep on my farm, despite the fact that I am having trouble paying the school tuition for my two kids. Because their reproduction will help pay for school fees and other household expenses, this endeavor will be helpful in the event of a future emergency. The school year for my children will soon be over, and since I won't have to pay anything while they are at home, I plan to spend all of my savings on at least one goat.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In our hamlet, GiveDirectly performed a great job with a high level of justice, making sure they met, spoke with, and got everyone's permission to take part in the project. We had no questions regarding the officers' support as they left the community because they had stated everything so clearly to us during their visit. Even though everything from enrollment to receiving the first transfer proceeded without a hitch, we wish they would always send the subsequent transfers for additional persons at the same time as the other groups after they have received them. We are especially appreciative that the office calls to follow up on every transfer sent to confirm receipt.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to keep my neighbor's cow in my field, which would greatly increase milk supply for my family of eight. My neighbor had to sell it a month before the transfer was received in order to pay for his children's school expenses. I had to let it go since I lacked the funds to purchase it in the hopes that the transfer would allow me to purchase another one. I had to wait until I got my second transfer, which I used to spend $350 on a nursing cow because none of my plans for the first transfer could cover additional expenditure on a cow. I am glad that the cow has given us a lot of milk to consume. I also used some of the leftover money to purchase food, spending $90 on two sacks of maize. The remaining money was then used to purchase new outfits for my six children. Following that, my entire family was grateful for the assistance provided by GiveDirectly. In our home, that caused a lot of change.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard my phone vibrate and on checking it, it was a Mpesa from GiveDirectly. This was in the evening and I was in the kitchen preparing dinner for my family. After a few minutes, my children rushed inside and informed me that there were celebrations in different homes since the transfer from GiveDirectly had been sent. They became so happy when I shared with them the good news as this money marked a new dawn in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There's a change in my daily life since I now have an asset that I can rely on in raising my children. I depend on casual jobs in the neighborhood and having a dairy cow is an added advantage to me. This is because apart from being able to save the money that I would otherwise spend on milk, I will earn some money through the sale of surplus when it calves. With this money, I can be able to support my children in their education by paying their school fees so that they will not be sent back home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have five children, three boys, and two girls. The boys had been sleeping with their father in the main house while I sleep with the girls in the kitchen. We decided on this since we had not been able to build a house for our sons and we did not want them going to sleep in other people's houses due to security reasons as they have to walk alone at night going to sleep and in the morning when they are coming to get ready for school. When I received the transfer, I spent KES 25000 building a house for them. I am glad that I will no longer be sleeping in the kitchen very soon since their house is almost being completed. In addition, I spent KES 20000 to purchase a heifer as a way of investing this money. When it calves, I will earn money through the sale of surplus and also be able to save KES 100 that we've been using daily on milk. Using the remaining amount, I bought some clothes for my children and food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a better house for me and my family. I have a family of seven, and they all depend on my casual job that I earn KES200 in a day. This amount goes to buying food and paying of school fees for my children. I wanted to build my house but then the priority has been to provision of the food to my family. Today I am super exited for this transfers from Givedirectly. I therefore plan to spend KES60000 to build a spacious house for my family. The remaining amount I will safe since our first born child will join Secondary school in April.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I felt happy three months ago when we were told that Givedirectly are planning to visit our village. We used to hear about this program in the far end of our constituency. But when our village elder told us about this good news, I felt happy about this program.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
One of the challenge that I currently face is lack of spacious house to accommodate my visitors. It makes me feel ashamed when I have visitors and can not accommodate them. My children are also grown up and I also need privacy. This transfers will allow me build a spacious home and stay comfortably with my family.
