How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Had it not been GiveDirectly coming to us, then I would not have managed to start my own food kiosk. I was employed in a restaurant previously but my target was to start my own food kiosk, which was made possible through the money I saved ever since I began to receive my transfers. My life is currently different because I now get a good income unlike when I was employed. Secondly, I am not struggling in paying my household expenses and meeting my basic needs like food and rent unlike when I had been employed.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I had been employed in a restaurant and because of the little wages, I resolved to start my own food kiosk. I decided to save every month until I had enough to start the food kiosk. I already started the kiosk business and my goal is to see to it that the business is expanded going forward. This, I am sure shall increase my earnings and improve our living standards as a family going forward.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20000 of my most recent transfer to add more stock and utensils to my food kiosk that I had started. This has increased my income since I can now serve a large number of customers adequately. I also used 5000 to pay school fees for my child to avoid any interruptions that could arise from my child being sent home for school fees. I also did some shopping for my family where I bought food items and other basic household necessities for my family. I saved the rest of the money to enable me to meet future financial needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that I no longer do casual jobs to get an income. I was employed as a waiter in an hotel in Mathare and I was paid two hundred and fifty shillings daily. This was not enough to meet all my family basic needs and I had to do casual jobs on weekends to get more income to cater for my children's basic needs. I used my transfer to start a hotel business and the income I get is enough to pay school fees for my children and meet other family basic needs. I am happy since I no longer do casual jobs and I dedicate all my time to my business.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to buy dairy cow. I will save the income from the business in table banking and later use to buy the dairy cow. This will be an investment to pay school fees for my child who will join secondary school in future. There will also be enough milk for my family since currently my mother buy milk and she will save the money she would have used to buy milk and use to meet other family basic needs. I will also sell the surplus milk to earn an extra income to pay school fees for my children
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to start a new business. Before I received my transfer, I was employed as a waiter in an hotel in Mathare. Early this year, the owner of the hotel relocated to her rural home and took all her belonging from the hotel. I took over the hotel and continued with the business. I used part of my transfer to equip the hotel with items such as utensils, tables and chairs.I am now happy since the income from the business can meet all my basic needs . In the past, I was paid two hundred and fifty shillings per day and this was not enough to buy food for my family and pay school fees for my children. It is my joy since I no longer struggle to provide for my family and pay school fees for my children since the income from the business is enough to provide for my family. I also used the remaining amount to pay school fees for my child since I had not cleared the school fees arrears.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I am planning to start a second-hand clothes business in my area because I had previously done it, but it collapsed due to the fact that I had spent all the capital on my medical bill. I believe that this is a business I can do well because I have the experience and it is also quite lucrative, more so during this Christmas period.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before I received the money, I was scared that I would be sent out of my rental house any day due to delayed rent payments. I knew I could not raise that particular month's rent as well and that is what worried me the most. With the rent now cleared, I am at ease and more peaceful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first thing I did when I received the money from GD was to pay my rent which I had not paid for two months. I saved the remaining amount which I intend to use to start a second-hand clothes business in December because that is the time most people shop for Christmas.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
When I woke up and saw the text, I could not contain the happiness and decided to call my neighbour to tell her the kind of message I had woken up to. She did not believe me and tried shrugging it off as one of those con messages, but I did not argue because I knew better. All I waited for was to hear from my group members if they had received their share.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have wanted to open my own hotel for a while but I lacked finances. This is because I have experience in hotel and catering services where I am currently employed as a cook. I have come to understand the business and also I have ready customers already
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is theft and insecurity in my neighborhood. I worry about losing my belongings, as I live in an insecure area where theft cases increase everyday.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to own a big hotel in the Central Business District of Nairobi, that will serve thousands of people and propel me into great wealth.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
My usual days I work as a cook at a hotel in a government office where I prepare meals for staff working in the offices. Cooking is also an activity that I love and enjoy other than listening to some gospel music during my free time.
