How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to own a house. Currently, we live on my fathers in law land and for the longest time my husband and the brothers have been having land disputes. My long-term goal is to save and get land before 2024.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy when I GiveDirectly staff visit me. Whenever I get an sms from them they make my day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am married and I am blessed with five children. Two are in school and I struggle a lot with paying for their school fees. I work at the mine and the job is hard because I have to work harder than the men to sustain my work. I get $4 a day which I spent on food. My husband does casual jobs where he gets $5 a day that pays school fees for my children. My biggest struggle has been feeding my whole family. Receiving this money has enabled me to pay school fees for my children without strain.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall I was on my way from the dam at exactly 6 in the evening when I heard my phone ringing. Since I had a jerrican on my back I decided to rush home first. A few minutes later, I asked my son to check my phone since I am illiterate. After going through the notifications, he realized that I had received my first KES 55000. I was overwhelmed with joy and thanked God for remembering us on the worst days of our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have decent beddings. For over thirty years I have been sleeping on the old traditional beds which were very weak and sometimes on the floor. Every morning I used to wake up with lots of fatigue and pains. I have been dreaming to purchase modern blessings for years but since I am jobless, I couldn't afford them. My spouse was the breadwinner of six and the little he earned (KES 200) could only cater to our daily bread and other household needs. Therefore my life has just been full of sorrows and troubles and sometimes I could experience sleepless nights because of the nature of the bed. I am now happy and thankful to GiveDirectly for restoring my lost hope and joy in life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying thirteen bags of cement at a total of KES 7000. These were for the renovation of my son's house which was about to collapse because it was unstable. I later gave the mason KES 4000 as his labor charge. In addition, I bought a new bed at KES 7500 and a mattress at KES 6100. This was to replace the old traditional beddings that I have been using for all that period that I have been in marriage. I am happy that I no longer experience any sorts of pains like before. Later on, I bought a metal door at KES 4500 to fix into my house because the previous one had worn out and I felt there is a need for enough security. In addition to that, I purchased a coffee table and saved KES 2300 into my microfinance accounts. With the remaining cash, I bought foodstuff for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Over two years ago, my house collapsed. I've had to stay in my son's cubicle with my other five children. Recently, we started to put up another house but we have not finished yet. With these funds, I'll be glad to use up roughly about KES 30,000 to complete the construction and move back in.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I look at the progress we've made in the construction of our house, I feel so happy. I wake up every morning with the knowledge we are inching closer to move and I cannot contain the joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband works in Mombasa as a mason. The money he makes is not enough to sustain the family. I hope to start a business so that my income can get a boost. Buying livestock and selling at a higher price is quite lucrative. I look forward to venturing into it.
