How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different in that, I now have money to change my life and give my family a better life. My children can now be in school after I paid their school fees, and I am able to sustain my income and provide for my family with the shop that I re-opened with Give Directly transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has done well in giving us money. It has been good for me to receive money directly from Give Directly. In my life, I never thought I would get such kind of money from anywhere. I am grateful to Give Directly for this money that has changed my life. In my opinion, there is nothing that Give Directly has not done well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers to pay for school fees for my child who was joining form two, and also to purchase stock for my shop, which is a business that had remained dormant for a while, as I had no money to afford capital. I have struggled a lot since I was a child especially after losing my father at a young age. I lacked most of the basic needs in life while growing up. I have wanted my family to have a better life than I did. Am very happy Give Directly has given me this chance to give my family a better life than I had. I can sustain my income with this shop that I have been able to revive from the transfers.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the motorbike taxi that I bought using GD funds. It gives us an income we did not have before. Earlier I would go for up to two weeks without even a shilling in my pocket. Now we get more than a thousand shillings each day! We are stress-free knowing that we have enough funds for us.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy to receive funds from GD. It has been a long time of having nothing at all. It was 6.30 AM. We were still asleep. The text message woke me up and I could not go back to sleep due to excitement.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I bought a motorbike taxi using the first transfer that GiveDirectly sent me. It has already brought in some funds for us. My son operates it and I am grateful that we have a source of income having operated it for a few days. We make a net profit of 1500 KES every day.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my life will change for the better. I will start a shop business at Kabateni town that will provide me a continuous income. This will sustain the needs of my family. I will also use some money to pay school fees for my children and buy two dairy cows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I wake up and I am healthy. My wife prepares me breakfast and we take it together. Seeing my wife and I satisfied makes me feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of permanent job. Back in the year 1963, I spent three months without a stable job. I used to eating mangoes as the only meal for the day. It was much painful to me.
