How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After completing the plans I had for the transfers I developed another new goal. I had planned to start a new business (selling second-hand clothes) within the village since I am jobless. I believe this would enable me to cater to all my household needs without straining.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a splendid job in my region. This is evident in the appearance of the whole village, our houses are now iron-roofed, every compound has livestock and our children are now in school. This was all achieved because during the enrolment there was no discrimination everyone was fairly registered. To add to this majority of the people in my village now have mobile phones, which has eased up our communication.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying two beds at KES 11500, and two mattresses at a total of KES 12000. These were to replace the old traditional beds that I have been using for over twenty years. I have been experiencing lots of back pains resulting in sleepless nights. I later bought two goats that I am currently keeping worth KES 6000. These will be the living assets that I will be relying on anytime since I had none. To add to that, I cleared school fees and bought new uniforms for my children who are in primary schools. I had to pay in advance so that they could study without any disturbances. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy the moment I received the money because I only used to wish about doing the things I wanted especially getting my family a better and spacious house but couldn't anything because I did not have the means or money to do them. Therefore, getting this money made me feel so good and proud.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life I would say is the fact that I am now happier than I used to be because I now have a better and spacious house. My children can now play around the house without the fear of knocking off some utensils and give me the headache of having to find replacements when they break.. Before I could only wish but could not do anything substantial, right now is different. I am able to do what I could only wish to do.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on building a better and spacious house. I spent a total of KES31200 being the cost of building the house inclusive of all materials, which included iron sheets and roofing caps that cost KES20700, the wooden poles, and timber for KES10500. I wanted to build this house because the one we have been living in previously was very small and the items in the house were so congested and disorganized. It used to be shameful as well in getting visitors because I would have to ask our neighbors to host them on our behalf for the night. Getting this house is a very big relief to us, especially for me because I am now happy and without any stress.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a spacious house for my family. I have three children, two whom are boys. I am currently living in a house which is one-roomed. I am forced to sleep with them in the same place. Also, when it rains, the rooftop leaks. This inconveniences our sleep. As well when my husband comes home from town, our privacy is hindered and this makes me uncomfortable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. It is at this time that I meet with my friends who I chat with. This refreshes my mind after hours of house-chores. As well, I get time to rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am unemployed and as well my husband engages in casual jobs in Mombasa. This has made us not able to raise enough funds to take our children to school and as well build a spacious house for our family. Unemployment is the biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life.
