How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Upon receipt of both my first and second transfer, I had a goal of enrolling my daughter in college. For the longest time, I couldn't do so because of financial constraints. I had saved for this goal and now I am happy that she is settled in school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly does well by giving cash transfers to individuals and allowing them to choose what to spend on. I do not have any complaints since all procedures were adhered to as we had been informed by Give directly officers during all stages of enrollment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having saved Kshs.40,000 geared for my daughter's college fees from my first transfer, I added an amount of Kshs, 40,000 from my second transfer to fully enroll in college. I am super excited that my dream of empowering my girl child had come to a reality. With the remaining amount, I bought all materials which I used in improving the floor of my house. I am super excited that I was able to achieve all these as I had planned and ever grateful to Givedirectly for making my dream come through.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the money I felt so happy I remember it was around 9am when I heard a message tone from my phone. My daughter was at home I informed her to check it for me. She said that it was message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy. My family members too were so happy. I knew I would be able to buy a water tank and get clean water. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a water tank. We used to walk for a long distance to the river to collect water for domestic uses. This was so tiresome and time-consuming. I had always wished to purchase a water tank but I didn't had the money to do so. I depend on small scale farming to earn an income. This earns me a small income and I was not able to save some money. The water that we used to drink was also not very clean. We were being so exposed to water related diseases. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy a water tank. Currently I have a water tank, I am so happy because I we no longer waste time to walk for a long distance like before. We have access to clean water and minimised the rate at which we expose to water related diseases. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the money I received from GiveDirectly to purchase a water tank. We used to walk for a long distance to get clean water for domestic. This was taking much time and it was fine consuming. I also renovated my house to look so decent I had always wanted to do this. Finally I bought food and clothes. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own assets which could have taken quite some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My life's desire has always been to have better education for my children. However, this dream was shuttered when I lost my husband in 2019 . Before then, we had sold all the cattle to cater for their education. My last born daughter completed grade 12 in 2018 and she has been yearning to further her career in Medical Laboratory Technology but with fail . When I receive this transfers , I intend to use KES 110000 to pay for her school fees. Although this might not be enough to clear her school fees of KES 210000 , but it will go a long way in filling the gap. She will be able to assist me in future as I am aged.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon for I have food to eat hence being healthy. I am aged and I occasionally depend on my children to provide food for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Although I depend on subsistence farming for a living , I am aged and not energetic enough to till the land. Furthermore, the land has oftenly been unproductive thus no source of income .I have no funds to educate my daughter and this pains me for she is not pursuing her career as her peers hence making it my biggest hardship.
