John
received a $149 initial payment.
"I used $40 to buy a water tank that would help me collect enough drinking water for my family. I had one initially which broke leaving us with no container to collect water. We would have problems accessing clean drinking water. I never had a motorcycle that would help me collect water from far away places and this would bring me a lot of problems more often. I also used another $75 to buy pieces of iron sheets that would help me improve my house. It has lately been attacked by termites and failing to improve it will eventually render me and my two grandchildren homeless. I then used the remaining amount of $80 to buy food and to till a piece of land that I own. I am so happy that I have already planted crops in my farm and just waiting for the rains to boost them. I would not have tilled my piece of land yet had I not received transfer from GiveDirectly. I am so grateful that my plans and dreams have been turned into a reality."

Talai
received a $134 initial payment.
"I had suffered a lot due to hunger. With my age I can hardly do any odd casual jobs like I used to do before. I also have two grandchildren whom I take care of and getting this money was such a huge relief to me. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. It is my helper and my child Mary who came and confirmed to me that indeed we had received a sum amounting to $200 from GiveDirectly. I normally get support from my children who are still in a position to do casual work and farming as well. This was not just a relief to me but to them too."

"GiveDirectly does well by giving money without conditions on how to use the money. The unconditionallity on how to use. Looking at what it has done to me and my family can only be grateful."

Christina
received a $336 second payment.
"In my opinion they does very well by giving cash and doing proper follow up to make sure that no one misuses the money at all. This makes us feel more comfortable and more responsible with the transfers. I do not find anything that should change with GiveDirectly . Everything according to me was just done in a good manner."

Jumwa
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"Being a widow, am the only person that my three children (one is in junior high school, one in grade eight, and the other one in grade six) count on for provision. I want to be capable of supporting their basic needs like food and education but am afraid my practice of making charcoal may not go a long way. That is why, I wish to use the cash transfers to secure goats to grow my wealth as they reproduce. In the future, I will sell them to cater to my children’s needs. As I save to buy the goats, I also wish to spend part of the money on constructing an extra room in my house. The current one-room space is quite small to accommodate the four of us. "

Nyevu
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"Before the year ends, I wish to have bought a wooded bed and a mattress. The sisal-twined bed I have been using is very uncomfortable to sleep on, as I wake up every morning feeling tired. After buying the bed, I plan to start saving part of my cash transfers to renovate my house. Particularly, I want to construct a concrete pillar around the house to reinforce the mud walls and prevent them from collapsing. I will be happy if the cash transfers fund this project because my business of making charcoal does not generate reliable funds for the task. "

Kadzo
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"When I received the funds, my grandson had missed classes for five days owing to an overdue tuition. His father(my son), could not raise money to clear the debt since he is unemployed. Also, my charcoal-making practice had not earned me enough money to pay the school fees. My priority was to see my grandchild back to school, so I spent $20 to settle the unpaid balance. He happily resumed classes and has been attending school to date; my heart is at peace. I used the remaining $14 to buy food, as the household had run out of maize flour that morning. This ensured that my family enjoyed regular meals for at least a week, which would have otherwise been impossible had it not been for the cash transfer. "
