Jesca
received a $195 initial payment.
"Before we received this transfer, there was no difference between us and those living in rural areas, only that we are required to pay rent every month. I say this because we were using a lantern, locally known as( koroboi) because we had no electricity. I also managed to buy some critical household items which have made my house look quite decent and I can say that I am living quite a happy life at the moment because I was able to use the money to sort out our rental issue, which was the biggest problem in our life."

"My greatest desire in life has always been to construct a bigger house for my family. Currently, I have a family of seven and we struggle a lot to fit in there and it is always embarrassing when we have visitors around. My first priority is to build a house once I receive my transfers. Secondly, I'd wish to start up a shop business that will earn me an extra income that will enable me educate my children who are in secondary school with ease. Finally, I will engage myself in livestock rearing specifically the oxen, that will enable me cultivate my land in time during planting season. Receiving this money therefore means; all the aforementioned projects will finally come into reality, all thanks to GD."

"My greatest concern is lack of stable income. Over the time my family has survived on casual jobs which in most cases is not sustainable at all. Am unable to pay school fee in time, of which my kids have registered low grades in school due to frustrations of being sent home every now and then. I feel like I've failed them. "

"My work involves cutting trees in the forest and burning them to make charcoal. This is an extremely tiring job and for the past few months I have been praying to find an alternative source of income. Receiving this money means I will be able to start rearing livestock which is a very lucrative business in Bamba location. Over time the livestock will give birth and multiply in number, i will then start selling them in Bamba market thereby earning income from it. With this income I will pay for my children's education and feed my family."

"I have been fully depending on my spouse for the last seven years of our marriage to provide for everything. The hotel business that he runs in Mtwapa can not adequately shoulder the family burdens of food, clothing, school fees and a good house.Starting up a general shop business that can generate profits to assist him cater for the said needs crossed my mind but I could not get the required capital.
Receiving money from Givedirectly means I will start the shop business and relieve my husband from being a sole breadwinner. It will also save me from the boredom of staying at home waiting to be provided with everything."

"This year 2018 my maize farm was attacked by pests and this led to the loss of the entire crops which would have produced an estimate of 3 bags of maize. This affected my family as we depend on the farm for food forcing us to skip meals and even go a day without a meal while also making the performance of my kids to decrease in school."

"My top concern is loosing my job as a waiter in a hotel that I currently work in because this will make my life hard. I will struggle so much with my upkeep, fail to provide food for my child and not be able to pay rent. I may in the end result in borrowing, stealing or engaging in prostitution to make ends meet. I am also concerned with insecurity in my area since, I come late from work at night, and I am forced to board a motorcycle and sometimes the riders are involved in criminal activities which makes me to fear for my life."

"My top concern is lack of a stable source of income because this has made my life difficult and unable to live a good life. I am an orphan and eldest in my family and I have the responsibility of taking care of my siblings education. Having no work can result to them dropping out of school or meeting my daily needs."
