Ghasia
received a $27 thirtieth payment.
"My main goal is to pay school fees for my seven children. Since my spouse depends on unreliable casual jobs, these transfers have been a great support, keeping my children in school by covering their fees. I don't want them to be sent home once these transfers end due to a lack of fees. Therefore, I plan to invest in buying goats so that I can still pay their fees when the transfers stop. I have already bought two goats with my transfers and plan to continue using them partly for buying goats and partly for paying fees. This is my goal for the coming year and beyond."

received a $141 initial payment.
"I have been yearning to own livestock because they provide milk and are a source of income through their sales. The transfer gave me the amazing opportunity to buy two sheep for $100. I chose sheep because they reproduce faster, three times a year. I am excited that the sheep will provide me with milk for my family. Soon, we will not have to drink tea without milk anymore. I am also hopeful that I can support my three children's education in the future by selling the sheep.
Additionally, I used $50 to pay school fees for my son in secondary school, allowing him to return to school without the constant fear of being sent home to collect money. This has been a huge relief, lifting the heavy burden of seeing him at home while his peers are in school. Previously, I would clear his fees by selling maize from my three acres of land. Unfortunately, my farming was severely affected by the persistent drought we experienced last year, which dried up our crops. I spent the remaining funds on food, ensuring my family had enough to sustain us. Lately, finding farm casual work has been impossible because nearby farms were swept away by floods that we experienced last month."

Changawa
received a $27 twenty-second payment.
"My primary goal in the coming year and beyond is to focus on two main objectives: building my house and paying fees for my six children. Currently, my house has a grass-thatched roof that leaks severely when it rains. To rectify this, I intend to invest in iron sheets to replace the existing roof, ensuring a secure and habitable living space. I am pleased that through these transfers, I have already bought some iron sheets in preparation. The financial support I receive through transfers has been crucial in enabling me to pursue these goals.
Additionally, I want to provide my children with the best education possible to ensure they can take care of their future when they grow up. This is why I spend part of the transfers on paying their fees. Achieving this objective requires financial support to fund their educational needs, and the assistance received through transfers has been crucial in making this possible."

"As a single mother of three, life is a constant struggle to make ends meet. I rely on casual jobs like weeding, pruning, tomato picking, and charcoal burning to earn a living. On a good day, I might earn $3, which all goes towards putting food on the table for my family. But these jobs are not guaranteed, and there are days when there is nothing. It breaks my heart to see my children go to bed hungry because I cannot provide for them adequately. I wish I had more stable work or support to give them a better life."

"Facing financial constraints is really tough for my family of six, especially since we depend on charcoal burning and farming for our livelihood. Unfortunately, the recent floods washed away my maize farm, which was our main source of income and food. I have replanted the maize with hope that it will not flood again therefore get some produce for my family. At the moment , I depend on charcoal burning although it is a stressful situation as payments are delayed, forcing me to take on debt for basic needs. I am determined to overcome these challenges and provide for my family's future despite the current hardships."

Esther
received a $425 initial payment.
"I was at the evening service in our church when I received a message on my phone. Since I was deeply concentrating on the sermon, I didn't check the message right away. After the sermon ended, I decided to see who had sent me the message. To my surprise, it was an M-Pesa notification, informing me that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy because this money would finally help me achieve my biggest aspiration: to buy a motorbike to supplement my income, provide for my family effectively, and also pay for my children's school fees."
